ok, i just did a clean format on the hard drive, planning to install a copy of win98se. win98 had been running on it fine. the only thing is, i think because its a compaq it has the crazy separate partition on tha hard drive for system files and such.

i can boot into safe mode, but not normal boot up. i know its not a lack of memory error, because theres 64 mb.

if you have one of these w/ the compaq system restore cd, and would be willing to zip up all the files and send to me (im on a cable connection, so it wouldnt be horribly slow) or if you know where i could download the needed setup files online, please help me out.

thanks

Josh

EDIT: fixed my bad typing

also, i would go and ask the tech email service ove at the compaq website, but you need a serial number, which you can only get while in windows, which i cant achieve with that computer. thanks again

Josh

It has a Cyrix M2 and super bad cooling

Pop a heatsink ****with fan**** on it and see if it helps (the Cyrix may be toast they tended to develop wacky errors in this system from the heat)

The serial # is on a sticker on the side or back of the case
