Question about ALX-800

What is the biggest fan you can mount on this heatsink without the fan adapter things?

That's WITHOUT those clip things? So the ALX-800 can accept 80mm fans? Do they just have those clip things because sometimes it can be impossible to screw certain fans directly to the heatsink?

Oh nooo.. You cant screw the fans to the heatsink! The clips are to affix the fan to the heat sink itself.
There are different clip sizes for different fan sizes. The clips "dig" into the 4 mounting holes and use their tension to keep the fan from moving around. Its a unique and odd system. You might want to consult the Thermalright website for better instructions

Ah, I see. I've never had a thermalright before...I assumed you could use screws like most heatsinks. Thanks for clearing that up.

I have this heatsink. I must say the fan clips were awkward at first, but they're really fast and convenient. You could easily clean out your heatsink every week.

Might I ask what your temps and hardware are?

Athlon XP Mobile 2600+ @ 2.5Ghz, 217x11.5 @ 1.725V (1.7V actual). As for temps, I was testing last night, and case/CPU temps went down to 22C/30C idle, and load was around 28C/45C. It's a bit hotter during the day, but overall pretty happy with the temps with this kind of overclock. Load stays below 50C.

Nice! What fan is that with? Going to definitely go with the ALX-800.

Oops, sorry. This is with a Panaflo U1A, which is the highest speed Panaflo I think. It's a bit harder to find though.

Fan specs:
Air Flow 46.9 CFM
Fan Speed 3450 RPM
Power 3.24 W
Bearing Type Hydro Wave Bearing
Fan Size 80x80x25 MM
Noise Level 38.2 db

Depends on how much noise you can tolerate I guess. I wonder what my temps would be like with a Vantec Tornado. You can also try the Panaflo H1A, which is around 32db IIRC, with around 35cfm.

Since you mentioned this will be your first Thermalright... the ALX-800 seems to work a bit better with higher CFM fans because the fins are quite close together. Because of the design of the clips, the ALX-800 will not work with fans (without modding) such as the Thermaltake units because it requires split screw holes.
