Question about AirPrint...

I was under the impression that one could print directly to an AirPrint able printer from an AirPrint enabled device, without going through a router or Wifi network. Is this not correct?
 
According to apple:

"The AirPrint-enabled printer must be connected to the same home Wi-Fi network as the iOS device. This is the default configuration in most home Wi-Fi networks."



In my experience with different printer models AirPrint works about 30% of the time. It's a great concept but seems to be very poorly implemented.
 
MustISO, do you mean different printer models that specifically state they support AirPrint? Because it's not meant to work with everything...
