Question about Acronis True Image

So I haven't reformatted my computer in about 2 years and I think it's about time to do so. I've been reading that Acronis TrueImage in the best program to use.

Anyway, I was thinking about using it to image my hdd BUT I want to load the image on a NEW system (new mobo/chipset/processor). Is this going to be an issue? For example, would Acronis back up the 975X mobo drivers and install it on the new system (p45 chipset) when I load the image and screw it up like that?

thanx

The Acronis Universal Restore feature can restore to different hardware configurations like that. They might have a list on their site regarding chipset and storage controller compatibility.

Yes, it will be an issue for the OS - you will probably boot to a BSOD. You can back up data and restore - but moving the OS to a machine with a different chipset etc. almost never works. At the very least, reactivation will rear its ugly head and probably fail.

so in my scenario, would Acronis be useless for backing up my data? Is there ANYTHING I can do other than moving the data file by to an external HDD?

It would work so long as you put the OS cd in before it boots from the hard drive and do an in place upgrade which would refresh all the drivers.

No - backing up data is quite a different matter than transferring an OS from one system to another. Back up data anyway you want - it can be restored easily on the new system.

Your initial input implied backing up the OS and restoring to a new computer. Different ballgame!

13Gigaton's fix might work - but it may well balk at activation, particularly if you do not have a full retail OS CD/DVD.

Thanks for the input. So in True Image, under the "data to back up selection" tab, I should just select "My Data" instead of "My Computer"? I've never used True Image before.

Sure - you pick the drive and the folder or folders to back up.

I have cloned drives with True Image Pro then ran sys prep to reseal the HAL and had no problems with Win Activation.

To create an image of the OS partition you need to select "My Computer" and then the partition that has the OS on it. Then restore this image onto the new hard drive of the new computer then before it boots the first time boot the new computer from the OS cd/dvd.

best not to bring the muck of an old system to a new one. it might work, but its best to just fresh install the os and image it. mainly its the motherboard/chipset that cannot change when restoring an image.

So if you are looking to move your OS from an old setup to a new one you would use the clone function, not the backup option.

I knew Acronis had a clone function but didn't see it. They hide it in the Tools menu. I would try that instead although having a image is still not a bad idea.

The clone function in TI 12(2009) is located in the UTILITIES section - lower left screen on main menu.

However, the cloned drive will probably not boot in the new machine - except to a BSOD.

Still need to do a stand in place install.

Like everyone has been saying though a clean install is the best way to go with a new motherboard.
