I've had a few interviews so far and i'm probably going to hear from a couple recruiters soon. What's the latest i can usually give the recruiter an acceptance of their offer? I don't want to accept the offer as soon as they offer it... i want some time to think about it.

they should allow you several days, minimum.

the first offer i got, they wanted to know the next day. i rejected them.

the next offer gave me a week, and i accepted it.

It's nice to be optimistic about getting a new job, but it's better to be pessimistic. I wouldn't wait more than a few days to accept/decline a job offer. Prioritize the companies you want to work for and if the one you like makes you an offer, take it. Call up the recruiters every day for a status update or else you will just get lost in the shuffle.

1-2 weeks is too long for most jobs. Maybe professor at a university, or head physician for a hospital wing, but anything most AT people will be it's too long. I would say 2-3 days, as papagayo said. Tell them this ahead of time. Say "I can give you an answer by such-and-such. Is this ok?"

long =/ 3 days sounds right

Ah, coop jobs are signficantly different I suppose. We're told 1-2 weeks is typically a reasonable amount of time, but you could ask the company for a deadline.

I waited longer than 3 days but let them know I was probably going to go with their job, still got the job. I was waiting to hear from another company I was sorta interested in but that was taking a bit too long, by the time they called about their offer I'd already accepted elsewhere.

I took the offer when they called and offered it to me.

I guess i needed a job and the pay was what i wanted. So i said YES.

I mean if delaying it a day or two gets you more money then i should had waited but other than that, why wait.

I don't recall if it did have a "respond by" date on the offer letter (I wish I kept mine for nostalgia reasons), but I wouldn't wait any more than 2 days from when you receive it in the mail.

Just tell them you have to talk it over with your spouse (if you're married). And/or you have to check your budget and insurance informaitno and make sure it's going to work for you. They should be willing to give you at least a few days to a week.

But if there a many people applying to the job, they could giv eyou less because they have plenty of other people waiting to jump on it if you decline.

I thought they usually call you to offer the job and they send out letters if they don't offer you the job. So far thats what happened to me.

The official amount they offer you is likely to come via USMail.

I've taken as long as I want with the two "real" job offers that I've had.

The first one gave me a month to decide. On the last day of the decision date, I called and told the manager that I wouldn't be accepting the job. He asked why. I told him that if he needed an answer that day, then the answer is no. He asked me how much more time I wanted, and he gave it to me.

The second job said I had a week to decide. I told the manager I wanted more time and he told me to ignore the dealine. I then went back and forth on salary negotiations for a couple of weeks after that and we decided on a start date of my choice (six weeks later).

I'm a real pain in the ass to hire. :D
