question about a router and icq.

hi.
a friend of mine;s router is preventing him from getting files via icq and via napster. it says that it cant establish a direct connection.

anyway to make it so he can get files?

the router type is: 4 port linksys

He has the ability to do this.

Find out from ICQ which ports he needs. Then, he can type 192.168.1.1 into his browser and reach the router config screen.

He can use the port forwarding option to forward the ICQ packets to his machine.

Or, he can set up a DMZ (demiliterized zone) for his IP.

You have to browse to the ip of the router and you should have a gui setup for the linksys.
Then you need to map the port that you want to allow traffic to flow.
Im pretty sure its port 5190, depending on what client you use.
The actual ICQ client uses like 7777 or something like that.

I haven't had any experience with this particular model, but you probably need map a port # on the router. I don't know which # it is, but I think it says which one it is during the ICQ installation. Map it from the outside IP address to the IP address of the machine on the inside. It should be in some sort of a configuration webpage on the router. Let me know if you need some more help.
