My neighbor gave me his old gas grill. I went out and got a new burner for it and a new tank of propane. I just installed everything and turned the gas on to do a test. As soon as I turned the knob on the tank, I felt a stream of gas coming out of a small hole on the piece that connects to the tank valve. (I think this is some sort of regulator before the gas travels to the control knobs on the grill.

Is it normal for gas to come out of this? I suppose I can always replace it if need be, but wanted to make sure it's not acting as designed. The hole was drilled at the time it was manufactured...

That would be the pressure relief port letting gas out.
Either they overfilled your tank, or it's broke.
It's a pretty cheap part

Sweet...so if I just go ahead and use the grill...it may stop hissing when the pressure gets lower. I figured it was a regulator...but wasn't sure of its function.
