Hi people, i have a IDE HDD laying around and a friend of mine told me he had an old NAS lying around that i can have if i want to. Of course i went searching for reviews but there are not any to find. All i know is that it is a linux based (1BAY 3.5 IDE ) NAS with a lot of extra's. The NAS is limited to sizes of 400GB. The HDD i have laying around is 160GB. And for me it would be enough. I do not have movies. Only my music and schematics and designs and some source code of my home projects. But i find it difficult to find reviews about it. I have a feeling it is terribly slow. It is based on a MIPS CPU solution.

This is what could find about it.

It has a IDE interface, so that works for me. But has anyone some experience with this model NAS ? Is the HDD accessed in DMA mode of PIO mode ?

This text from the specification list makes me assume it is about the USB interface ?
"
Supports Data transfer rates up to 28 Mbps
"
Or is it the transfer speed over ethernet ?

fast ethernet ports = 100Mbps

USB 2.0 = 480Mbps

MP3 streaming bitrates about 128Kbps

Since the spec says data transfer rates up to 28 Mbps, it should be over ethernet.

Since it's a freebie, you can try and see. What I worried is that the enclosure seems doesn't have a fan. It cloud overheat in hot summer and kills the drive. Plug in a USB fan if needed.

The NAS router spec looks pretty good, except the slower ethernet speed.

So it depends how you use it. For music, it's overkill, but good for the job.

I would just use it for backing up data present on my pc. I use syncback free and a nas would be perfect for it. I now use external usb hdd drives in combination with sync back free to back up my data. It would be sufficient.
One of my usb external hdd stopped working.

I do not worry about over heating. I will just drill a few holes in it in a circular pattern and add a fan if needed.

I just find it weird there is no review about it. I mean, is it save. I am a bit paranoid about that. I do not want it to make unwanted calls to "home".
It does seem to have all linux source code available. But i have no desire to start digging through source code.

Some user experience would be nice.
I have read the manual and it does seem like an interesting device.

28Mbps does seem slow. :|

I wouldn't worry any call home functions.

To be effective to steal your info, the firmware needs to recurse every folder and every file and find the correct file and read the correct info.

According to the site info, the company is IC INTRACOM,

company history info, decide yourself.
