Ok...I just sold someone my video game (NFL2k3 for the XBox) and he sent me back a check for $30. Ok...how can I "convert" my check into cash? I'm 17 and I'm dumb when it comes to finances. I do not have a checking account or let alone, a bank account. The buyer of my game said to bring my check to any bank and tell them you want to cash it in...is that true? Please help -- thanks :)

Take the check to a branchof his bank to cash it. Take ID with you. I doubt other banks would honor the check, especially if you don't have an account there.

Yeah, bring your check to a bank and tell them to cash it. Better yet, if you're 17 it's time you got a savings account while you're at the bank!

Most banks will charge you a few dollars to cash if you do not have an account.

I don't know about where you stay but you can sign it - give it to someone you trust (parents etc) and they can take it to their bank - they sign it and get the money for you!

Works where I live. :)

Uh oh...the bank on the check is "Prosperity Bank" and there are none around my area to my knowledge (Connecticut).

I asked for my friend's opinion and he says since I'm under 17, I need to give the check to my mom and she'll cash it in under her account and draw the moeny out for me.

I *think* any bank will honor the check. I've never been aksed for ID when cashing checks. As long as the check is endorsed on the back they don't care who cashes it.

That'll work to. I used to do it all the time. :)

Only if the check is written in her name.

Just get a savings account, it's easy to do!

The check on it doesn't have his name or address printed on it. There's no "symbol" on the corner of the check either. His name is written on there though...

But that check could bounce! NEVER take a personal check unless there is a branch of the bank it's written from located near you and NEVER take a personal check for anything you are not prepared to do without. NEVER.

I hope you haven't mailed the game yet. Always make sure a personal check clears before shipping the goods. You should be able to endorse the check over to your mother and then she could deposit it into her account.

just get someone else to cash it for you, I do this for my sister all the time
She endorses the back of the check and gives it to me, my bank makes me sign the back too, then they just cash it and give me the money

it DOES NOT have to be in his mom's name for her to cash it. before i turned 18, my parents could cash or deposit my checks into their bank account without anything from me at all.

A personal or business might take months to come back and bite you. Money Orders or Cashier's Check is the only way that is safe for both parties.

Bad sign. This means that he either ran out of printed checks, or, more likely, he just opened the account under a week ago.

A check is only an IOU. Do not ship the games until the check is cleared and real money is in your (or your Mom's) account.

EDIT: Ugh! You already shipped. Well, good luck!

On the back of the check write PAYABLE TO: Your Mom's name here then sign it underneath. It may be a good idea to go with your mom when she goes to cash the check, also make sure that you bring some I.D. just in case.

I second the recommendation about opening a savings and checking account with your local Credit Union [directory]

That is no guarantee that it still cannot bounce. Unless from family or friend I never take a personal check.

I suppose you could specifically ask them to put a hold on the funds until the issuing bank actually pays the check. When the hold is released, you know for sure that the check has cleared.

That does not work. The check can appear to be cleared and the funds deposited into your account. If the party writing the check is charged for any fraud complaint all money spent after the complaint can be confiscated at will by the courts. In other words, the money you thought you had can disappear without notification!

This sounds a bit far fetched, but fact is always stranger than fiction. It does happen!
