I just bought the CD: Schizophonic by Nuno

(That's Nuno Bettencourt from Extreme) :)

Anyway, I purchased it on [/b]EBay[/b]. I got it in the mail yesterday and found something odd on the jewel case insert.

On the very front that faces outword the following is embossed in gold lettering:

<< For Promotional Use Only. No Sale Allowed. Must be Returned on Demand of Copyright Owner. >>

Do all the Schizophonic CD's have this? Is this a collector's item?

Any help is appreciated..

thanks,

amish

Sounds like the ones the record companies give to radio stations to use on-air.

Retract your previous claims that you own this cd. That way they can't demand it back from you. :D

What you have is a promo copy that the Record comapnies give to radio stations, record stores, ect...Some cds have the promo crap printed on them somewhhere others have a hole punched thru the UPC symbol. There is nothing wrong with the CD, it's just someone along the line got it for free!

You sure do have alot of modern technology for being Amish! :D

That's a promotional CD. The company makes a first batch, and distributes it freely to the media (radio, newspapers etc.), hoping to have it reviewed. Whether it gets reviewed or not, it's decided by the editors or people in charge with that segment of culture. The stamp has its origins in the idea that record companies wanted to be able to recover the CD's, in case they didn't get reviewed. In practice, though, this has never happened - once a CD is being sent to the media, you can kiss it good-bye.

Yep, I have boxes of CDs like that from when I used to be a music reviewer for a chain of Newspapers.

You know, most of what we get is garbage no one has heard of - I listened to it all and made some great finds for my personal taste (bands like Grey Eye Glances) but much of it was really lousy stuff!

And of course there was the big releases - it was nice to have new albums weeks before they were available. Some companies can be pains, though. "The Artisit's" (Prince) people called my editor once with all kinds of rules about when to review the new album, what to say, how to refer to him... yadda yadda yadda...

I was cheesed and especially since I hate his music I just never bothered to review it.

That was the only time and album was ever asked for back by a label from me.

Fun job for a college student! :)

I get a CD every month that says "For promotional use by professional DJ's only". Basically, you're not supposed to have it to listen to yourself, it's for playing for other people, or reviewing, that kind of thing. The CD itself is even called Promo Only.
