Question about 98 Ford Explorer XLT

aplefka

Lifer
The hand thing is broken so I have to manually lock each door because every time I turn the car off it unlocks all doors automatically. Any way I can disable this because not only is it kind of annoying but I know that the rear door is never locked and if anyone else picked up on that I'm screwed, especially in the neighborhood I live in.

Should I check out the fuse box or what?

What was your address again?

Fuse is the only answer? I'm just worried because on my old-school Mercedes (1987 420 SEL) the power locks was also the same fuse as a whole bunch of other stuff.

Also, LTC8K6, that's not what I meant by hand thing. I meant the keychain panic/lock/unlock thing. The unlock one is messed up so I can't lock all the doors with it since it would arm the alarm and set it off when I unlocked the doors with the key. Stupid, I know. I blame engineers.

If it's just the remote, why not get one off eBay and reprogram it yourself.

Should cost you $20 or so.

Also, you can disable the auto-unlock feature, see that post above. 97/98 Explorers are pretty much the same, I would say it would be relevant for a 98.

To active/deactivate autolock/relock feature:
1.Turn ignition from OFF to ON/ACC.
2.Press power door UNLOCK,three times.
3.Turn ignition from ON/ACC to OFF.
4.Press power door UNLOCK three times.
5.Turn ignition from OFF to ON/ACC.
A horn chirp indicates the activate/deactivate feature mode is entered.
6.Press power door UNLOCK one time.
7.Press power door LOCK to switch between Autolock/Relock.
The user will hear a horn chirp followed by either a:
Long honk--autolock/relock activated.
No honk--autolock/relock deactivated.
After leaving the activate / deactivate mode,if autolock/relock has been
changed, there will be a horn chirp.

Out of curiosity, where does one look up these sorts of procedures? Do they actually put them in a manual somewhere? Because I only ever see these sorts of bizarre sequences to "reprogram" the car computer on the internet.

I thought it was bizarre too, but I have an employee whose wife drives an explorer and we tried it and sure enough, it worked!

Another guy was irritated at the DRL's on his Silverado. Sure enough, there's a button dance you can do to cancel them, too.

These are like Easter Eggs, I guess.

Yes, you can reprogram the remote yourself as well. You just have to find a forum with owners of the same vehicle. They have probably already seen and dealt with any problem you may have.
