For 98 civic ex coupes, they have 127hp right? and for the 1.6 liter VTEC ex coupes, they have 161 hp, correct?

They're both VTEC but the higher HP is for the Si, at least in the states, not sure about Canada.

They are all 1.6L. Both have VTEC, but the Si motor has more HP. If they're both 98 EX, they have the same engine, unless somebody did a swap.

Yep.

The B16A2 from the Si also has an extra cam, and higher compression to get it's higher horsepower numbers.

The D16Y8 is the engine in the Civic EX. The DX and LX trims both use the D16Y7, which has a bit lower compression than the Y8, and lacks VTEC.

watch out buying civics that you dont know too much about. a lot of people swap out motors on SI cars with a d16 SOHC motor and sell them as SI to other people.

Chances are that you know someone who has some knowledge of civics and have them check it out.

HP in those ranges are all really all the same minus the SI. Since its your first car i'll assume it will be an AUTO. with a auto tranny you will almost never hit vtec because you will be at a lower RPM range.

they are nice cars. EX models should come with power locks/ windows. etc. it should say VTEC on the engine cover. Try to get a stock one.

more power to you. clutches on those cars are very easy to do. I think the civic Si are 99-00. Not sure about 98. Si are 2 doors either blue, black,red. red and white tails.

i've always had a thing for a 99-00 civic hatch. but i feel the cars cost more then what they are really worth.

The badging is slightly different in Canada:

US Si = Canada SiR (both 160HP)
US EX = Canada Si (both 127HP)
_____ = Canada EX (106HP; non-VTEC)
