question about 802.11 stuff

I don't have any wireless networking stuff but I have been curious about it. Is it possible to do a computer to computer network (non base station) with 802.11 PCI cards? Say you have a cable modem or phone modem connected to a computer with a regular NIC. Could you just stick a wireless PCI card in it and turn on sharing and then be done with it, or is a wireless base station required? Obviously a base station would probably be the better option, but I would like to know if they are required for wireless networks.

Thanks
