question about 6600gt clocks (solved)

i was just wondering, how does the card know when to run with a 2d clock (300 mHz) or a 3d (500 mHz) clock speed? i was jw if i should just change all the speeds to 500... i just wanna make sure its running at at least 500mhz.

[EDIT: also asking because rivatuner showed the clock at 300mhz...i obviously dont want it running that slow if thats what it IS running at...thanks.)

don't need the high clock in 2d, so it saves power/heat generation. It knows when it's doing 3d i'm pretty sure, otherwise 3d would be agonisingly slow.

It probably knows when to bump the speed by when the D3D or OGL driver is in use. I wouldn't worry about it. If you're reading RivaTuner while at the Windows desktop, well, then everything's working as it should.

If you want to be sure, run a Doom 3 timedemo and compare it to an online review's score, and then run 3DMark, Half-Life 2, or some other Direct3D timedemo and compare. If you're in the ballpark (take your CPU into consideration), you're good.

If you're really concerned about it working, just use the log feature of Rivatuner and have it log the core clock to a file while you play a 3D game. You're able to keep a log of the core temperature, memory clock, core clock, and a few other things as well. Comes in really handy if you're concerned about your card getting too hot or throttling down.
