from a DVD/DVD-A/SACD player to 5.1 reciever...do you just need to get six regular RCA cables?

depends on the dvd players. Some have a builtin decoder and they'll have RCA cable outputs for each channel. Most DVD players have optical/coaxial digital outputs for DTS/Dolby Digital decoding receivers.

Might want to check that, SACD and DVD-A will never pass hi-res audio via toslink or digicoax. You're either using 6-ch (or 8-ch or whatever) analog, firewire or some proprietary connection like Denon's Denon-Link 3.

To answer your question OP, yes, 6 regular analog interconnects are all that are required. Even though I could run a digital signal out of my player, the player has better A/D processors than the receiver by a slim margin...although that would certainly help with the clutter behind the two. :p

your receiver has 6-channel analog connections?
if so yes. it wont sound as nice as coaxial/optical though. might want to look into that instead

Yup, and the DVD player I'm getting has 6-channel output as well.

Receiver

DVD Player

I'll get two of these cables or three of these cables to cover the necessary RCA cables.

I'm using coaxial on my current DVD player now (yay for DTS!).

And yet only EvilYoda was able to answer it correctly.

For the best sound, you'll want 6.1 analog connections for DVD-Audio/SACD. Regular DVDs can use either the 6.1 analog connects or a digital connection to your receiver. If the DACs on your receiver are better than your DVD player, use a digital connection. Otherwise, stick with the analog.

I don't have super good speakers, so I don't really care. I'm planning on running 6-channel direct for SACD/DVD-A and coaxial digital for DVD movies. I already have a coaxial digital audio cable and RCA cables are cheap. Although, I'd imagine the DAC in my DVD player is better than the DAC in the receiver, because the receiver was $77 and the DVD player is $130 (which isn't saying much, lol). How do you tell the difference, which is better and whatnot?

might as well run all-digital optical for all media since your receiver and dvd player can connect that way.

that receiver is able to do 6.1 matrix on a 5.1 speaker setup; SACD's should sound great. if not, then try out 6-ch direct analog.
