Question about 2 NICs in same PC

I have determined that my 3com NIC is incompatible with my ENI dsl modem (it works in every LAN situation I have put it in, but wont work with any of that type of modem. That isn't a big deal for me since I will be going to college this fall anyway, and will be using the network there). Anyway, I was wondering if this would be possible: I have 2 PC's, one has a kingston NIC that works fine with the dsl modem. The other is a new one with the 3com NIC I mentioned earlier. Could I put 2 NICs in the PC with the kingston NIC, then run a straight through cable from the PC to the modem, and then a crossover cable from the 2nd NIC to the 2nd PC? Would that work? What else do I need to set up? Do the NICs have to be the same brand/model to work in the same PC?

You can do it. The machine in the middle would have to be able to forward packets and you can use any type of network cards.
