Question about 1U Power Supplies

So I've got a case that has 3 1U PSU slots and I need to pick up PSU for it. It's a 2N+1 which means two are used and 1 is for redundancy. I don't need the redundancy though as it's for a NAS. So can I only use two of them and leave the third slot open? Or will this cause any issues?

My other questions is if the PSUs have to be matching? Or can I use two PSU from different manufactures or even different power ratings? I'm curious because the original were 700 watts for a total of 1400 watts, but I'm not going to be using nearly that much and the same cpu/drives/mobo I'm going to use is the same one that I've been running off 750watt PSU. So could I get away with getting two 400watt PSU for a total of 800 watts and can they be different?

Sorry I've not had any experience with 1U PSUs and I have lots of questions! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

they're not universal, so chances are you have to find the one that works with the chassis and connector.

Depending on your motherboard/chassis. Some power can load balance between the two. if 1 power is out, it'll run the full wattage on the remaining power. so if you need 800, you'll need to get 2 800, it'll run in 400w mode till 1 dies and the working one continues to provide 800w to the server
