I just bought a router and the power adapter (12v 2a) is broken. I have a 12v 1.5a adapter that came with an external HDD encolsure. If I used this external HDD power adapter in the meantime until I get the replacement adapter would I risk causing any harm to the router? I plugged it in and the router seems to power up and the LEDs turn on when I use the 1.5a adapter but I haven't actually set up the router since I'm not sure if its safe to use the 1.5a adapter.

What does the router state it needs? The AC adapter might have been 12V 2A because that was the cheapest one in to the bin at the time even if the router only needs 12V 1A. If the router is rated for less than 1.5 amps, that one will work fine assuming the pins are right (IE + -)

The router says 12V 2A, same as the adapter. Good suggestion though.

I wouldn't run it with the 1.5amp then. It could over load and damage the router.

It's probably fine. 12V * 2A is 24W, which is quite a lot for the little MIPS or ARM chip that is usually found in a router.
