I just called comcast to order cable t.v. and high speed internet. I wanted to do a set up myself or self installation instead having the tech guy come over to set up network for me. I learned that I m required to use the self installtion kit and must have the comcast software to install in order to have internet running. I find it odd.

I really dont feel comforable to install comcast software in my computer. I didnt have to install cox high interent software on my computer and I like the way it is. No hassle with cox softwares. i just set it up and connect direclty to modem. Win xp automatically sets the network connection without any problem. I wonder why can't comcast allow our way to set it up without any installation software.

Do you install comcast software?

Can I set up internet without comcast software? Also it costs more to have self-installation kits which is pretty absurb.

You can install the ssoftware but not needed. Did it myself with out the software, strictly plug and play. Sounds like someone wants to make a buck.

The software just sends out some stuff to verify the location or something weird like that.

In other words, you can uninstall it immediately afterwards. I used my laptop to setup the internet, then it worked for any computer (without softwarE)

When I got my self-install kit there was a rebate that covered the cost. Not sure if that promotion is still going on.

No, you do not need to install the Comcast software.

The self-install kit basically just contains a Comcast-approved splitter for your cable line and some coax for connecting your modem. You hook up the modem, power it on, call the 800 number. They'll ask you for your account information and for the MAC address on your cable modem. After a few minutes, you're up and running. All they'll ask you to do is verify that the internet connection is running. It's a pretty painless process.
