Computer (please no comments about buy a new PC):

Self-built PC of several years ago.

MSI K8MM-V motherboard
AMD Athlon64 3700+ Socket 754
2gb (2x1gb) G Skill PC3200 / 2.5
NVidia GeForce 6200 256mb AGP
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz
80gb WD800JB 8mb SE
2 - DVD-RAM drives
Floppy drive
Card Reader
Windows XP Home Edition, SP3

Computer picked up a rogue security tool, managed to clean it up but not comfortable enough with end result. Decided to wipe/reinstall.

Low-level formatted HDD, fresh installed XP w/ SP3. Installed drivers:

AMD Athlon64 processor driver
VIA Hyperion Pro 5.24a chipset (etc.) drivers (K8M800 chipset)
NVidia 307.83 driver (for 6 series)
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz driver/software from the original disc
Via RhineII Ethernet driver (VT8237 Southbridge)

Plugged in my flash drive to install software, rebooting the computer delivered the warning message:

!!! QueryDosDevice failed. More data is available.

I've never seen that before. I've formatted/reinstalled this PC several times during the last few years, never seen this message before. I don't get the message if the flash drive isn't plugged in. If more data is available I can't find it. There's nothing of any import in the event viewer.

This is bugging me because I don't like weird things happening on a fresh install.

Anyone know what might be happening?

Thanks, -kd5-

Additional info:

The first time I clean-installed XP (yesterday), I installed the Hyperion Pro drivers, then installed an updated V-Raid driver (because I like to have the latest drivers). This time (after a LLF) I just installed the Hyperion Pro drivers. This motherboard has SATA capabilities but back when I built this computer I used a 80gb IDE drive. Not currently using SATA but have it enabled in the bios just in case. It was like that before without issues.

Another oddity:

Now, on a fresh boot I plug the flash drive in, I get the !!! QueryDosDevice failed message, click OK, several seconds pass and I get the message again, and again, and again. As soon as I safely remove the flash drive it stops.

What the hell's going on here?

I'm wondering if it's a driver issue or a hardware issue. The Hyperion Pro drivers (5.24A) are the same ones I've used before (released June 09, 2009), I wouldn't think an updated (even if it is updated) processor driver would cause that. The audio driver is the same one I've used before, same sound card. The only thing different might be the video card (not sure when I put that in there - before or after the last format/reinstall). 2 fresh installs of XP, with and without updating the V-Raid driver, even with all Windows Updates + .Net, it's still giving me that error when I plug a flash drive into either a USB 1.1 or 2.0 port.

It wasn't doing this before the format/reinstall, no radical changes made. I wouldn't think that rogue security malware would cause that or I would've seen that error before I did a fresh reinstall.

It's bizarre. Everything else is working perfectly.

Anybody?

Format the flash drive and see if the problem returns. Also, where us you flash drive in the boot order?

The flash drive has data on it I don't want to lose. Besides, it does the same thing with several different flash drives. The drive configuration is correct for this computer:

Drive A: Floppy drive

Drive C: OS install
Drive D : DVD-RAM drive
Drive E: DVD-RAM drive
Drive F: Card Reader
Drive G: Card Reader
Drive H: Card Reader
Drive I: Card Reader

Drive J: Flash drive

I have read that RAID controllers/drivers can cause this issue.

Where in the boot sequence are you getting this message?
