Query on vDIMM Compatibility with Mobo

Dear all,

I am in the final stages of putting together my new system and one thing has me stumped. It is the matching of RAM to mobo and vDIMM levels. I want to leave OC'ing to one side to keep things simple for now.

Let's say I am using the Asus P5B Deluxe which supports vDIMM from 1.80 to 2.45 with 13 steps of change. Now we have RAM that has a nominal voltage (say 1.9V) advertised and has an upper limit which in many cases is 2.3V before the warranty is voided.

The mobo has by default in BIOS AUTO as the vDIMM setting. This would suggest it trys all voltages starting from 1.80V upwards until it gets a successful POST with the RAM in question.

If this is the case then any DDR2 RAM with a nominal voltage within the range of the mobo should work. Of course performance may be better with some than others and with OC'ing the landscape changes completely.

However, I see loads of comments about memory incompatibility. Even now on NewEgg, for the P5B Deluxe the latest review is from a person with RAM rated at 2.1V which cannot POST. He had to get some other RAM that ran at 1.8V to get POST then change the settings upwards. It doesn't make sense to me.

I have looked for FAQs on various memory manufacturer websites, sharkyforums, this forum and google without success.

TIA.

^^bump^^. I have combed the House Of Help (Corsair) and The Tech Repository and still see contradictory information. I think I will be okay but would like some confirmation on my understanding.
