Quattro 850 will no longer throttle down fan speed (and is LOUD)

When I first got my system, for the 2 weeks the system would start, and the PS fan would be at 100% (loud), and then in 1-2 seconds, throttle down, making the PS nice and quiet.

Now, for some reason, the system starts with the PS at full fan strength, and stays that way 100% of the time, even in sleep mode!

All I've done recently is changed some settings in the BIOS (and then *reverted* them) and even tried unplugging the 4 system fans, and nothing will throttle the PS back down to low heat speeds.

Is the PS defective? It USED to operate normally for about 2 weeks, now the system is obnoxiously loud ALL the time.

It's not hot where the PC is either. I think some sort of thermal detection has become defective.

Can I try any BIOS settings (nvidia 680i chipset w/Q6600 cpu) to change this behavior?

What do you guys think? Bad PS? Otherwise, it powers the system just fine.

I'd suspect a problem with the PSU's temp detection circuits too..

It is the PSU, specifically the fan control circuitss. You'll need to RMA it to get it to shut up.

Nothing an end user can do can fix a fault thermal sensor in a PSU.

If the controller that adjusts the fan voltage fails, by default it's going to supply a full +12V to the fan to avoid overheating resulting in damage to the PSU.

PCP&C has an excellent support system in place... use it.

EDIT: LOL! I saw 850W and replace Quattro with Quad in my head and automatically assumed it was a PCP&C. 😛

How dusty does the fan look? Are the vents clogged?

I emailed Antec and they told me the unit was bad, like most of you said. Thanks for the help.

I'm going to go through newegg RMA instead, but from reading the reviews again for this PS, I guess there's a known problem with certain versions of it, and the 8800 GTS (which I have) where the PS won't supply enough power to the video card. While the chances might be slim, I don't want to take the chance of getting the same PS, just to be one of the units that has this defect (there was a manufacturers response to people's reviews)... so, I'm thinking of going with the Zalman 600w instead.. I've read it has enough power to handle SLI 8800's, but only by a couple people's reviews. Maybe a silverstone.. dunno yet. Most people said the Zalman was pretty quiet, which is one thing I'm looking for, just need more proof it will power my system (Q6600, evga 8800 GTS o/c'd 640mb, evga 680i MB, Sli down the road no doub).

Someday I'll sig my system specs...

Even though I Love zalman products as well as PC Power & Cooling products.

Let me say that for the price of the Zalman you should really check our the corsair brand of PSU`s....
