RANT ON

For the SECOND TIME in 10 months, I've crashed my harddisk again. First a Quantum LM and now a IBM75GXP. GOd, I'm so mad!!!!! Does IBM RMA harddisk bought from online dealers? What's the deal with it? I shut down, turn my pc back on and voila, scratching sound is heard while reading it. I'm using Win98Se and yes the shut down is VERY VERY FAST but I don't see the HDD crash on my friend's pc.

GOD HELP ME CHOOSE A QUALITY HDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What makes people think the 60gxp's are good? People were recommending the 75gxp's like none other a while ago... What makes people think that the 60gxp's won't die down the road? Cause IBM says so? Look at the specs of the drive, it's faster than any other one out there... Could this be a problem? Does IBM run their drives to aggresivly just to hold the speed crown?

I'm staying away from IBM. Only Maxtor or Western Digital for me.

OK, this may sound ridiculous, but how do you know you hard drive has crashed and is unrecoverable?

I have always bought quantum up till a week ago. I have my first Gig drive (1.2 Quantum Fireball) and it is still kicking to this day. I also currently run a Quantum Fireball LM and it is rock solid. I just recently purchased a Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 40GB and I am now wondering why signs I should watch for...for potential crashes.

I don't really know about Maxtor and Western Digital. I have been using Quantum all over the years till I tried the 75GXP. It was fast but died fast too. :(

I've got 2 dead Quantum with me from returning customers. Any idea who do I contact to return them?

I'm looking for a fast and queit drive for now.

There were no signs. How did I know it crashed?? Like I said, I can't even read the drive and try running scandisk and when it reach a certain cluster, there comes the scratching sound again.

Hmmm...i just got another quantum 40gb this weekend at Fry's. It was only $109 with rebate for the 40gb 7200rpm fireball...now i'm starting to wonder if these things will break down. Geez...those 75gxp drives are dropping like flies...a maxtor died on me two weeks ago and so far their rma service sucks crap...now i have a western digital 40gb 7200rpm on my other computer...but people keep saying the wd drives suck. so is seagate the only one left? i have an old 500mb conner drive and it's still alive since 1994 but i think conner went out of business.

Thanks bozo1

Quantum drives are longer lasting that any other I've seen. :) My last few drives blew because of my own fault. :p
