Quantum = Maxtor?

When did this happen? 😕

<---------- out of the loop.

Also are the Maxtor Fireballs any more reliable then the Quantum Fireballs or did they just take the Quantum Fireballs and put the Maxtor logo on them?

Maxtor bought Quantum out a month or two ago I think...cousin worked at Quantum. When Maxtor bought them out, they laid everyone off.

Isn't it just so very... ???

MaximumPC talked about this in the latest issue.
Maxtor says they will give exchanges, but it is a
don't tell-don't ask policy. Ugh.

So... yeah, we need someone to really look at
those disks, and tell us, are the Quantum's really
quieter? Do they really perform as well?

Funny aside: guess which drive they use in the
$25,000 "Packet Shaper" network traffic shaping device?
The Quantum Fireball. You be the judge!!!

It is over a year ago when Maxtor announced the acquisition, but it did not finalize until last summer. Im really amazed some people still havent heard about this, this happened a month ago or two?? Anyway, the Maxtor Fireballs are just straight out Quantums, they didn't even both to put their Maxtor logo on them. But the two hard drive lines have started to integrate so future hard drives will be codeveloped by Maxtor and the former Quantum engineers. The Fireball Plus AS, the model Maxtor put in their boxes, is virtually identical in performance to the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 60 of the same generation. They're both very quiet hard drives, many owners can confirm this; and it is indeed true that some Quantum drives possess Fluid Dynamic Bearings. Whether if there's really any performance and reliability differences is debatable, but seriously, if Maxtor trusts Quantum's reliability, then Maxtor fans shouldnt worry about it. I mean, who knows Quantum better than themselves does now that they own Quantum?

The Maxtor Fireball series are effectively rebadged Quantum Fireball AS drives, as LXi mentioned above.

The Maxtor D740X is a co-developed (but mostly Quantum under-the-hood drive code-named Viper)....which accounts for some very typical Quantum characteristics like loud seeks but extraordinary seek performance.

Andy,

The loud seek noise is no longer a characteristic of Quantum's since they abandoned the SCSI-like arbitrators used in their old 7200rpm hard drives, Fireball Plus LM was the most famous. Starting with the Fireball Plus AS, they've used a new head/arbitrator unit designed specifically for IDE that's relatively quiet compared to the competition, as a result the Fireball Plus AS did not have "Quantum-like" access times. The D740X on the other hand, is even quieter than the Fireball Plus AS due to Maxtor influences.

So what do we think of this drive?

MAXTOR EIDE HARD DRIVE MODEL # 6L040L2 40GB 7200RPM - OEM, BARE DRIVE DiamondMax PS D740X Plus ATA133/100, 2MB Cache Buffer, 3 Year Manufacturer Warranty "L" denotes Fluid Dynamic Bearing Motors.

heh, they had an article on Maximum PC about this issue. Maxtors take? Quantum drives are better, so your lucky. hehhe

years ago i was a quantum fan... now i've got two raid 0 (on promise ata100 TX2) maxtors d740x 60gb.... not nearly as loud as any quantum i've heard but the performance is there and i'm wowed... got a 80gb seagate cuda iv too... and a wd 20gb and a 30gb quamtum... all are 2mb cache and 7200rpm... in order of loudest to quiestest: quantum, maxtors, western digital, and seagate... a year or two ago i remember seagates being as loud as quamtums and i've also used some ibm's... their the same thing as the western digitals if you ask me...
