Most LCT drives by Quantum only have a one year warranty instead of the standard three year. This is why the AS drives, which currently have rebates, are a better deal. Buy.com has the 30GB AS for around $130, minus a $30 rebate and your cost is around $100. Be aware that Quantum is notoriously slow with rebates.
All this being said, I think the LCT line are good drives. Now if this drive had a rebate similar to the AS, that would be hot.

I got that Quantum Fireball Plus AS @7200 at buy.com day before yesterday for $69 net. $129-30 coupon -30 MIR.
Although the buy.com 30 off 150 (which took some knowledge to be able to use) may have expired by now. Not sure. Drive actually arrived today, though I chose cheapest ground shipping. Amazing deal all in all

I can't resist telling you all that my Quantum MIR is the biggest stinker on my Excel sheet of outstanding rebates. Paperwork went in 5 months ago and just two days ago they wrote and said that due to "overwhelming sales" they won't get around to paying me for at least another month.
My advice is to buy something else. And they ARE loud!

Is it noisy when just spinning, or noisy when reading/writing?
As a ghost backup drive (to two ibm 75gxp 45's in a raid 0), mine will just be sitting there spinning almost all the time.

Just a false statement. The Quantum Fireball LM is noticeably noisier than other Quantum models, yes, but this isn't that drive. The other models are absolutely no louder than any other drive, and Storage Review alleges that the new AS line drives are the quietest they've ever tested.

Quantum are the LOUDEST drives! Do yourself a favor and get an IBM Deskstar ATA/100 and you won't regret it! What's a few dollars more compared to the constant "grind" of Quantum drives? I will never use Quantum again...
shawmat: Could you list the model numbers of the loud quantum drives? I assume the lct20 is obviously one of them, but which ones?

I have Fireball AS. I don't know if it is loud or not, since the only thing I can here is the sound of those damn "fans" in my PC. In fact, occassionally, I need to look down under the table and see if the Disk-LED is on or not in order to see if the program I run is indeed running or not. 
Quantum does make a big deal about its "quiet" technology in this drive on their website (which I stumbled upon when finding and printing my MIR coupon).
Maybe they fixed the noise problem in the LM or earlier drives?

I'd tell you the model # of my LOUD Quantum HD for which the $30 rebate is STILL outstanding, but I retired it (new in Sept) and sent it off to college with my daughter after Christmas.
My new Maxtor 40 gig is quieter.
BTW so far I haven't needed case fans (Luckystar,Cu mine OCed at 851 retired for a MSI,non OCed 1g T-Bird).

Only 30 gigger I know of that had a rebate recently was, indeed the Fireball LM. Which this drive is not.
The fireball AS still has a rebate available for new purchases, I believe through March 31. It's on their website at the writeup on that drive. In their "store" I think.

but they are inexcusably loud. I have one
in my primary computer, and I can't wait
until that puppy dies. Heck, I may put it
out of its misery myself. Waddaloadacrapola.
Oh, and I still haven't gotten the rebates I
sent in 4 months ago. I called them once and
they told me they were running a bit behind
and that the rebates would be going out in
a couple of weeks. That was about a month and
a half ago.

I don't think the LM was that loud. If you had a cheapo case, it would transfer vibration to the case and make it seem louder than it is. In my solid InWin case, it wasn't bad. Nothing like drives from a few years ago.

This is because making head seek quieter actually hurts performance. The heads don't react quite as fast, and thus makes less noise.
Storage review has this documented when comparing the newer AS which is slower than the LM.
So the gist is that quiet isn't all good. And like I said, this noise issue is way overrated. The LMs aren't that loud.

Oh good. Glad I got the quieter, slighter slower access time unit. Much better as a tape drive for backups.
I just put the AS harddrive into a new system this week. Got it from buy.com with the rebate, etc. It's quieter than the maxtor diamondmax plus 40 that I have in my other machine. I agree with what others have said--I can't hear the harddrive working over the noise of the fans. AS isn't ranked as fast, but can you folks perceive the difference? I don't think I can, but maybe I will in time??
well, i doubt people can even hear these drives, especially if they got dual 7000rpm delta fans on their cpu
My Quantum is definitely louder than my IBM and Maxtor drives, but pretty peppy. With the rebate (which is definitely sllooowwww, but at least they've emailed me twice to tell me they're working on it) it's a good deal, though.
