Need a quiet 400w power supply. The crappy 300w ps in my media pc took a crap. Trying to keep it around $40. Any recommendations on what and where to buy? Thanks.

At $40, your best bet for quality will probably be a Fortron like this one. I'm sure you can find it cheaper elsewhere. Not sure about how loud it would be though.

Just a word of advice though: "Quiet", "Quality", and "Cheap" are words that don't often go together very well. ;)

$40 will not get you anywhere....

any real QUIET PSU will cost you around $100

now as a "quiet" workaround, you can simply REPLACE the old noisy FAN to use one of the QUIET fans
like these ones from SilentX http://www.silenx.com/ixtremaprofans.asp
they are super quiet, as in really you don't hear a thing

SilenX?? :thumbsdown::laugh:

OP, Buy a Seasonic S12 380 or 430W unit for the best of quiet with high end build quality.

On the cheap but still very good and known to be quiet...The Silverstone Element ST40EF.

The very cheapest would be the Enhance ENP-5140GH from eWiz.com for $57.
The ST40EF is based on this unit.

I've got the equivalent Sparkle PSU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103013

Quietly powers a 7900gs & A64 4000+.

Anyways GTdrew - if a crappy 300w psu was enough power, then you'd be fine with even one of these for $36 shipped:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103011

Or this for $39 shipped:

That is not true. I own/use this ps in my recording build. The fan does not make a sound. You literally have to press your ear against the case, and then you can hear a slight hum, but if your ear is not directly on the case, you cannot hear it.

Also, it has never given me any trouble with reliability, and I am more than pushing it too its limits.

OC'd 940 @ 3.9ghz
2 gig ram
X1900GT
7200rpm hdd x2
etc.

All without a hitch. That ps comes highly recommended.
