Quality PC Speakers?

It seems to me like nothing has really changed for years in this area. Back in the day you had three real choices - logitech z-560, which sounded like crap but had loud, boomy bass, or klipsch, which sounded a little bit better, but still pretty much the same.

Then there were those monsoon flat panel speakers that were like absolute orgasms to the ear, but you needed to be *exactly* in the sweet spot, and they were pretty weak on bass. I always thought the FP speakers would be the tech of the future, because they sounded sweet, but it seems like all the speakers are there are still the nonsense phase plug logitech stuff, or the crappy altec lansing/creative microdrivers.

Whatever happened to quality PC audio, or am I just missing something? (Not including receiver/discrete setups)

Sorry, those Monsoons weren't THAT good. They were okay, but since all other speakers at the time pretty much sucked, it's why they sounded as good as they did :)

Logitech Z4s are quite good for the money...
ok, at $100 for the set, they are too expensive for what you get, but they do sound really good.

I've still yet to hear a set of multimedia speakers (as in satellites/sub, not ht stuff) that had the clarity that the monsoons did when you were in the sweet spot. They had absolutely no oomph at all, but they were crystal clear.

I used to have the Monsoon 5.1 system (505's?). I remember wishing I had gotten the 2.1's instead, the PM 14's or whatever they were called. I loved those speakers though. I wouldn't say they sounded better than my MX 5021's, but they had a different quality to them that I absolutely loved.

I later picked up a pair of Magnepan MMG's and found that quality again.

Edit: Actually I still have the 505's in the garage somewhere. Watching Saving Private Ryan on them was amazing.

I'll take them off your hands if you're just letting them sit around and all... :p

The Cambridge Soundworks stuff wasn't too bad.
I still have a set of FPS2000 sitting at home somewhere - I should hook it up again.

Klipsch Promedias thought FTW.

I'll actually let you know if it turns out I have no use for them. I believe I did offer them to my sister when she comes back to visit.
