Quality of refurbished hardward?

I'm want to get the Dell 2001FP LCD monitor, but it's a pricey piece of hardware. I noticed Dell outlet is selling refurbished versions for about $300 cheaper. I'm a little nervous about buying a refurbished monitor. Why did it have to be refurbished? Will it have dead pixels? etc.

What has been your experience with refurbished hardware?

Thanks.

I don't have experience with refurbished hardware, since I avoid it... People will sometimes amaze you with their stupidity, especially with computers. Only god knows what might have happened to it... Not to say there aren't knowledgeable people who take good care of their stuff and then sell it when they upgrade, but for every one of those there are probably 2-3 who would spray lysol on a computer if they thought it had a virus and who think the "intarweb is broken" when their modem cable is unplugged. I find that thought scary and only buy new. Trusted friends would work too.

i bought various refurbished hardware and all of them still work. in 1999 i bought a refurbished external cdrw and it stil works.

bought a 22" refurb NEC for 1/5 the cost, bought a 17" Refurb that I'm currently using. Don'tmind refurb with crt's

It could just be returned because someone couldn't pay for it or they didn't like it. If it's busted they'll take it back, but there may be a dead pixel problem with it.

There is a lot of Hardware being sold as refurbished that has been out in the field on lease to big companies. A lot of high end stuff sits on some execs desk for show and is never even powered up. The key is buying from a reputable outfit that can tell you where the stuff came from. I bought an $1800 monitor for $250 that has operated perfectly for a couple of years now. At that rate even if it failed tomorrow I could throw it in the landfill, buy another one, and be money ahead.

i'd say thats just asking for a dead pixel, esp if urnot buying from bricka nd mortar store where quick exchange is possible.

it generally really depends on the product you're dealing with. For stuff like optical drive and LCDs, you usually don't want to buy refurb in case of dead pixels or wear and tear from the moving parts. For stuff that generally lasts forever (like a CRT monitor, power supply, keyboard, speakers, etc), definitely go the FS/FT/ refurb route 🙂

I've been lucky with the few refurbs I've gotten. Some refurbs are the reasons listed above. But, some refurbs are actually brand new products. I've talked to a few manufactures that told me certain refurb products they sale are actually extra stock or slightly older technology. They call them refurb, sell them cheaper and generally offer less warranty to clear them out. Sometimes it hard to determine what type of refurbished items they are.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

All of these points are valid. Anyone ever deal with Dell specifically with a refurb purchase?

Ditto on this question. Dell has an amazing amount of refurbished hardware in their outlet section. Anyone try them out?

depends entirely on the refurb itself. ive had pretty good luck with refurbs, from speakers to concoles, to hardware. its risky though. sometimes you might get an awesome deal thats near perfect, other times you get a messed up equipment. dell is generally pretty good and pretty strict on refurb quality so i dont think youd have a problem with them. newegg is a bit worse from my personal experience, although ive never bought refurbed monitors.

I bought refurbbed memory, athlon 64 and mobo recently...all work great! Buy from companies you trust and have good customer service and you most likely cant go wrong

Definitly wouldn't buy a refurbished LCD. People sometimes return those because they have dead/stuck pixles. I wouldn't want to chance that.

I agree. I've picked up some good deals on referbs, but I'm very careful about what I buy. LCD's, Hard Drives, Floppy's, CD ROMS / Writers & DVD's are things I stay away from. I buy Motherboards, RAM, Video Cards, Cases, Ect...because in most cases these are items that people bought that worked fine, but they didn't know how to set up properly, therefore they gave up and returned them. I only buy from referbs from Newegg because I can return them for another within 15 days.

Took a risk and ordered a refurb 2001FP ($698 + tax + $14 shipping) Tuesday night 11 p.m. Got it delivered Friday 1 p.m. (62 hrs) via Airborne Express.

Got one stuck on green pixel with black background. No dead/stuck pixel on white background. Other than that, it works/looks great.

Ordered refurb Mobo, cases, PSU, video card and memory from Newegg and all work like new. I always buy new HDD and CPU.
