Quality of oil filter

I was going to do an oil change myself, and I was wondering if I should spend the extra money on a Mobil filter for about $10, when I can get some cheap, generic one for around $2-$3? Does it make much of a difference? Also, does synthetic oil help much over regular 10W-40? Thanks.

Actually after doing a bit of reseach I found several studies that ranked the Purolator Pure One oil filter as being the best. I use Mobil 1 synthetic oil in my cars and was also using the Mobil One filters until I found out about the Pure One. Not only is it cheaper...it's better.

So a higher quality oil filter would give me more mileage, longer engine life, smoother operation, etc? Some or all of those?

HERE is some good info I copied a while ago from a paper someone sent me. Not sure if it's copyrighted but I put it up so you could see it.

I have something similar about oil filters somewhere, just have to find it.

A better filter and higher quality of oil can improve your mileage and will absolutely increase your engine life.

Better quality oil filter will keep your oil cleaner which will help you engine to run better and can possibly give you better gas milage. You can you synthetic, but not if you have an old enigne. They have a large amount of detergents in them that may expose engine oil leaks you never knew you had. However, if you have a fairly new engine synthetic should be good.

I remember a display of two filters cut in half at a Honda dealership. One was a FRAM, the other an OEM Honda filter. There was a distinct difference between the two with the OEM filter being of much better quality.

IMHO... buy the one the factory DESIGNED for the car.

In general, the cheap stuff works fine. Fram is a decent filter, with no glaring faults. The differences in a high quality filter has more to due with solid construction needed in extreme high pressure situations. The Mobil 1 filter may claim better filtration and gas mileage, but as long as you keep your oil change intervals within 3k miles, the difference is minimal (most filters prob wont clog before 3k anyway) Neither I nor my friends has ever had a fram filter leak or fail in anyway. However, for purely self assurance purposes, the extra coupla bucks you spend on a more expensive filter may be worth it to you.

First advice on oil brand, stay away from Penziol. Penzoil is like
Microsoft, may not be the best product but they have the best marketing
team ;) I normally use Castrol synthetic blend.

In all honesty it isn't going to make that much difference what oil
filter you go with.(except Fram diesel filters- stay away from them
if you have a diesel)

Synthetic oils make engine wear almost non-existant. Most owners
manuals tell you not to use synthetic oils until after the break
in period. This is because the engine may not break in if you use
synthetic right away. Also synthetics come in different weights than
regular oils, probably want to just stay with a 10w-30 or 5w-30.

<< generic should be fine - it's like ram >>

Generic ram tends to suck, like oil filters. I use motorcraft oil filters.

Gospel..

And unless your car is low miles, I would recommend AGAINST using synthetics. Use a good 10w40 every 3 months/3k miles, you will be fine.

After I bought my Durango last year I called Dodge about this since I intended to use Mobil 1. They told me you could start using synthetics right away without issue. In fact the engineer that I spoke with told me that all new Corvettes with LS1, LT1, and LT5 engines used Mobil 1 straight off the assembly line. He also told me that Mobil and Porsche signed a deal to have Mobil 1 in their cars when they rolled off the line.

I thought it was kinda cool for him to
1. take the time to speak with me.
2. Use other manufactures as a reference to how much faith they had in synthetic oil, specifically Mobile 1

In hi-performance engines they do. Vipers also come from the factory with
Mobil 1. However, these engines are built a bit different than your
a typical engine and it is likely that the a normal engine wont break
in using synthetics right off the bat. After the second oil change is
generally when they start recommending you go to synthetics. To each
thier own I suppose :)

I don't mean this as a shot to engineers, but when I was a tech at a
large Dodge dealership I didn't rely on alot of what they had to say.
