Just got the KK266-R and I am wondering what the quality of the onboard sound is like. I already have an Aureal Vortex SQ2500 but don't use the digital output. The soundcard is connected through my receiver using just a regular cable. I was thinking of dumping the SQ2500 just to save a few bucks. Especially if the onboard sound is decent.

its kinda of subjective.. but its fair at best, you're not going to get like DD qaulity sound or anything, for listening to sound effects it might be ok.. if ur an audiophile you might vommit when you hear it.. if sound is a non-issue to u, then it should be ok, if not, get a good card..

Its said that its the best onboard sound of any board. But it IS onboard so you will see more CPU usage. I would use a PCI card for the extra 2fps (My SBLive does good at not using CPU cycles).

From the sounds of it, the onboard sound is better than others but still only decent, right? I have an Epox 8kta+ and the onboard sound was horrible but if this is better I will just get rid of the Vortex SQ2500. I am not really worried about CPU usage. I just think of it as with the Epox I could only reach 1.3 ghz but with the Iwill, hopefully 1.4 ghz so it makes up for it.

TunaBoo,

Thanks for your thoughts. Will try the onboard sound first, then decide whether or not to get rid of it. I am using the 8kta+ which is a KT133 MB. So I am limited to 1.3 ghz on a AVIA. I am a little behind most of you guys as you upgrade to DDR, I just moved to the KT133A.

its actually not that bad, since its a hardware chip. its not the crappy ac97 codec you find on most boards, its a decent c-media hardware 4.1 sound chip.
