Quality construction under 1000 $

Asus, Dell, Toshiba, Hp and Sony, I think they offer the best value for this price. I am not so interested in performance, but I would like good construction quality and reliability. Any suggestions?

Well, it is said that Lenovo is sticking to IBM's standard for quality, so if you can find a thinkpad for that price then you might want to consider it.

I don't agree with that opinion based on the lenovo thinkpads that I have seen, but plenty of others like them.

Alternatively, the MacBook at $999 is a pretty good deal for what you get, and my white plastic one is still going strong and taking plenty of abuse after 2.5 years

hit up ebay, or fs/t. thinkpads can last a while. I had a T40 that was still damn sturdy when i sold it 6 months ago. and I have a t60 that i bought used and is still in very good condition.

you can get a T series starting at $929, but it needs ram. the T has kinda been the flagship thinkpad for a while. SL series starts at $499. Might wanna ask around here or thinkpad.com forums and see if people are happy with the build quality on those.

Or you can get a dell latitude or precision, check the outlet for refurbs, those are built better than the inspirons as i understand.

Thanks for the answers. For several reasons I exclude apple. You suggest Lenovo Thinkpad T or Dell (Latitude or Precision, maybe also a basic xps). Therefore Sony, Asus and HP offer worse construction quality at least in this range price, right?

In the price range... yes. Sony's construction is apparently quite solid, but I hate working (from a technician's standpoint, not a user's) on them due to how they are constructed. Also, people may bitch about the Apple tax, but the real deal is the Sony Tax... trust me.
