I'd really like to get an LCD to reduce power consumption... and I don't want to downgrade to a 15 inch... I'd like to move up to a 17 inch at least. (I'm currently using a 17 inch CRT) My main concern is ghosting, dark areas, etc. I'm not too concerned about color accuracy... I mean, if reds are a little darker than normal or something like that it's not a huge deal.

It's been a while since I've seen any LCD reviews, so I'm wondering if prices might have dropped at all on some older favorites.

Nope, LCDs havent gone down in a while, you can't even find 15s for 200, much less 17s.
Current market price for a 17 is about 350, and thats with a sh!tty brand too.
Expect to pay about 400+ for something decent with dvi, 16ms response time and .264 dot pitch.

Most 15" LCD's are the same size as 17" CRT's, so it won't be a "downgrade". You might be able to find some 15"s for 200~~ but probably refurbs or low qualtiy.

I don't think you can even get a non-quality 17" LCD for $200. Best deal I've seen even remotely that low was a 17" Sony LCD for $299 AR at DFW Fry's and it sold out fast.

LCD monitors are a rip off

Along with Porsches and Rolexes?

Porsches and Rolexes are superior to regular cars and watches in most ways.

LCDs are superior to CRTs in geometry, size and power consumption only.

LCD demand is stronger than production capacity, so unless China and other Asian countries are going to open up more production facilities, we won't see any sharp decrease in prices.

They are also easier on the eyes, and are sharper, and display text better.

Samsung production on LCD's is backlogged for two years! Not much chance of a price reduction there. LCD's are not good for gamin', but OK for everything else. Beware of fast frame video-smear!
