Qualcomm Technologies Announces Next Generation Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 Processor

Interested in what, if any uarch tweaks Qualcomm made this time around. Krait 300 to 400 brought very little, as far as Anand reported anyway - just L2 improvements and process implementation changes. It looks like they're getting more invested in GHz marketing which is slightly troubling.
Hoepfully they've just been waiting for 64-bit before a revamp. Qualcomm's typical work for and with the manufacturers, and integration work on their SoCs, does tend to come through as pretty polished phones, IME. It would be a shame if they didn't try to stay ahead of the curve with the CPU; because regardless of need (my dual Krait 200 far exceeds my needs, FI, inclduing browsing non-mobile websites just fine), marketing will make others leave them behind if they don't.

4k video might have some use when filming things at a distance and wanting to crop the footage later.

even with a 13MP camera distance shots tend to turn out poorly. Video isn't anywhere near that density, so it's magnitudes worse.

4K may not be much use in phones, but it could be helpful in high-end tablets. It would also be potentially important if a vendor wanted to make a set-top box using the Qualcomm SoC.
Yup, as a display the res is awesome, my classmates new Apple laptop has like 3.5K by 2k res and you'd need a magnifying glass to see the pixels, very nice image. But for movie content, files are way too large and games will run like crud.

2880*1800 actually. And it displays at 1920*1200 for the max system resolution unless you use third party software.

I thought the same. QCOM is focused on client needs, so maybe this is what their clients are demanding. Samsung has used QCOM when their next Exynos CPU isn't ready yet. Apple's phones are a premium brand, so their customers expect premium performance.

QCOM needs more volume to remain competitive, so I can only imagine that staying behind a bit technologically is what brings the most sales for them. I was just looking @ the Kindle Fire HDX and it's using an older TI OMAP4 SoC!! And it sells like hot cakes - so, it comes down to dollars and cents for most folks.

I saw a commercial on TV, about some "photographer" saying that Nokias new 41MP phone was better than his SLR cam. So bad a hoax it hurts.

Yeah huh! Like having an aperture of ~10 mm is the bomb
Not to mention the other deficiencies of a phone cam relative to a digital SLR.

A better lens and sensor will do much more for image quality than 4K video.

I dont see what use 4K video is on a smartphone. Who wants to have 2.7GB worth of their 1 year old smearing cake all over his face on his birthday? Like you really need that much detail? Who wants to deal with requiring 20 TB worth of hard drives to store all that data?

The same people that record it now in 1080P, that, even at 1/4 the pixel density, is fuzzy, due to optics and sensors not being up to the task. Do I really need to go dig up the, "it goes to 11," scene, on Youtube? 🙂

From what I understood, it was meant that it's better for you're average Joe/Jane. You know, the best camera is the one you have on you.

I've seen too many rednecks carrying cannons (that's two N's) around their necks to disagree.

I agree with this. If you rule out smartphone cameras because they are inferior to DSLR's then the same logic can apply to every part of a smartphone. How do you deal with such inferior Web browsing? A laptop with keyboard should be a minimum. And you should likewise carry a real speaker or don't bother listening to music on a phone. Watching videos on a phone is also pointless following the same logic.

Everyone should carry a dumb phone and leave anything other than phone calls to other serious tools..

I think lots of people here are in denial.
