Qualcomm Falls on Concern Apple May Switch to Another Chipmaker

Apple Inc. may be going in a new direction for a crucial iPhone component that connects the handset to the Internet, and such a suggestion caused Qualcomm shares to tumble.
Qualcomm Inc., the world’s largest maker of chips that go inside smartphones, indicated on an earnings call Wednesday that it may be losing some orders from Apple for modem chips that link the iPhone to the web. Qualcomm Chief Executive Officer Steve Mollenkopf told analysts he is “assuming” that a major customer will give orders to a rival, indicating a potential loss of business for the company.

Sure, people will say Apple likes healthy competition and low prices. But it's a crucial first step in Apple switching to Intel foundry and maybe even IA. At least if those 1000 that were working on it aren't fired. (See earlier rumors of those 1000 people and Apple going Intel foundry.)

Edit: Although I gotta admit I don't know that such a crappy subpar modem will be doing in such a high-end device.

Even if Qualcomm is talking about Apple here that doesn't mean that they're going to be using Intel modems in iPhone 7. The second supplier could be MediaTek. This could be for non-iPhone products or a later iPhone.

and maybe even IA

Never stop believing.

As far as I'm aware, Intel is way, way behind Qualcomm in RF and Modems for mobile. I haven't heard anything about that changing.

I'm not sure who else it might be, though.

The original quote was "assumed" dual sources. It is interesting he mention dual sources because that would likely mean Apple hasn't committed as much quantity for modem as Qualcomm expect.
Or likely Apple foresee global Economy / China therefore less unit forecast.

I don't believe they will be using Intel, unless Intel are producing their modem inside their Fab.
