Qualcomm 10nm server CPU on track for end of 2017

CEO Steve Mollenkopf said that the company remains "on track for commercial shipments of the Qualcomm Centriq 2400 processor family by the end of the calendar year."

The Centriq 2400, by way of background, is a 48-core chip designed specifically for data center applications, and is manufactured on an unspecified foundry 10-nanometer chip manufacturing technology. Mollenkopf also stated that the company has "already shipped more than 1,000 evaluation platforms to leading customers and partners."

Glad to hear that this going to happen sooner rather than later.

Surely Intel will not lose sleep over this. But it is still a good start.

Also makes me think that Cavium is screwed. If they weren't already.

How is Cavium screwed, in your opinion? In a lot of ways, I think ThunderX2 is shaping up to be a considerably better chip than Centriq is. (Also, I'm at SC17, and I'm seeing a lot more ecosystem around TX2 than Centriq - so at least on the technical-computing side, it seems TX2 is doing rather well.)

Cavium has first-mover advantage (and they absorbed their only competition in the ARM server space up to this point, so that hurdle was out of the way) so you are seeing more developer mindshare. That being said, Qualcomm is huge, and not above playing dirty where advantageous. Cavium still seems to be stuck on a 16nm process (TSMC?) vs the Centriq's 10nm, and the Centriq is packing 48 cores with a TDP of only 120W max. I haven't seen TDP figures on any of the ThunderX2 variants (Vulcan or otherwise), but the clockspeeds would seem to indicate TDPs well in excess of 120W.
