quake3 in little window

I have a wierd problem which occured a day ago and has decided to stay. When I start quake3 it switches to the res 1600x900 (!) and runs q3 in a kind of window. it does so in every res except 512 and 1600x1200. This is mighty stupid if you ask me. anyone know a cure?
