http://bethblog.com/index.php/2010/08/06/id-introduces-two-quake-live-subcription-packages/

Premium $1.99 per month
Pro $3.99 per month

Premium per year = $23.88
Pro per year = $47.88

Cost of Quake 3 Arena at release - ? $50.00 maybe $60 ? - all mods & all maps free, forever !

I have been enjoying playing quake live since it's live release, I have requested maps and mods on the forums from time to time. None added thus far.
They go offline for a full day, and come back with prices. Beta is complete.

Sound worth it ?

I got the Quake Pack on Steam for a few bucks and have every Quake game. Sucks they're charging so much for it.

Umm...no you don`t....here is what you get...
After being down for a day, QUAKE LIVE players missing their online fragging fix can return to action later today — as the game has officially exited beta! In addition to the ‘Standard’ free-to-play version, in a press release today, we’ve announced ‘Premium’ and ‘Pro’ subscriptions — adding new maps, game modes, and plenty more. Details below…

The Premium Subscription, which can be purchased for $1.99 per month, billed annually, includes:

Access to 20 QUAKE LIVE Premium only maps at launch with more to come. Premium maps are a combination of brand new maps and frequently requested community favorites from previous QUAKE games such as Aerowalk, Theater of Pain, Japanese Castles, and Realm of Steel Rats;
An all new ‘Freeze Tag’ game mode;
Exclusive premium level awards;
Create your own clan and join up to five separate clans;
Custom QUAKE LIVE profile wallpaper; and
Match statistics stored for six months.
The Pro Subscription, which can be purchased for $3.99 per month, billed annually, includes all of the premium subscription features as well as:
The ability to start your own game server, specify a server location, determine the game mode and invite who you want to join you;
With the Pro Subscription, you can invite three friends with Standard level memberships to play with you in any Premium level map;
Exclusive pro awards;
Create your own clan and join up to ten separate clans; and
Match statistics stored for 12 months.
The QUAKE LIVE ‘Standard’ version is still free to play and includes friend lists, access to one clan, matchmaking, and stats tracking delivered through a web browser with over 40 arenas and five game modes.

To create a QUAKE LIVE account and for more information please visit: http://www.quakelive.com.

id, i think they had the fans in mind, when making quake live. some ads will pay for it all.

But now id is owned by bethesda, it's new game here. A money game.

I am in shock, wow. A 10-11 year old game (without all it's mods)", for the low price of 2-4 bucks a month !

I am a die hard quake player, through thick and thin. But i'm not stupid. They are giving less then what was out there before. All the mods and maps.

I give up, bu bye quake live

What I find interesting is essentially you people are crying about a game that up until today was FREE....still is free....

yet adds were NOT paying for the free game.
You do know you get nothing for free......since it would appear that the fan base is large enough they have offered two different sets of payments, plus the game is still free!!!

You say some adds will pay for it all...are you goofy or something?
Somebody has to fooot the bill for servers all over the world.......I just don`t understand the crying.

sorry!

For All The People Who Raging About Paying and Other Similar Topics...
PAYMENT PLANS: The reasons for Quake Live going on a payment plan and implementing ads are perfectly sensible.
-Servers. They cost money to run. It's simple.
-Additional content. Premium and Pro get more maps and more game modes. Money allows the devs to include more stuff since their time and effort isn't free.

"But with Q3 we can get it for free." No you don't get free servers WITH matchmaking WITH and the ease of joining servers compared to a comparable Q3 server. Compared to Q3, QL has:
-A unified player base
-A unified server browser
-Is easier for a new player to jump in and play since there are no hoops to jump though like installing mods or other items in that manner
-Doesn't have to worry about someone paying for a server
-Matchmaking
-More options by default including most through the GUI
-Better balanced weapons
-And more

I'm not saying there aren't legitimate problems or concerns. There will problems especially right now with QL coming out of beta. However most people are just crying/raging for no reason whatsoever.

I paid 50 bucks for q3 years ago. Why should I have to pay again for the same thing? Worst part is, I would be paying for even less now. Less mods and less maps. Sorry, but it seems like ID is just trying to milk money out of players while offering nothing new.

If they make money, maybe it will encourage Epic Games to make an Unreal Tournament (99) Live. (Nah, it'll never happen; they want the UT IP to die.)

I don't play Quake anymore, but I've owned and played them all. That said what I find amusing about paying for this is you are now paying for something that was essentially free. Sure you paid $50 for the original copy, but you could join servers galore for free. Yeah, yeah, yeah someone was 'paying' to have a server running, but they apparently didn't mind paying...

Maps/mods/skins were always free courtesy of the community.

Now thanks to console gaming every dev and their uncle want to micro transaction charge you to death.

To say people are complaining is a little off base considering the circumstances. It's like Anandtech suddenly wanted to charge you per post after being 'free' for the last 10 years or so. Would that be fair?

YES it would be fair!!
Provided anand had stated previously that these forum were coming out of beta in the future and once they came out of beta you would have to pay to post in certain forums...but in other forums there would be no charge....

So YES it would be very fair!!

At first I was wondering how they'd encourage anyone wanting to pay for pro. But offering server hosting is a very smart way of doing it. Their prices are a lot cheaper than what a lot of people hosting good Q3 servers were paying back in the day.

However, as far as maps and mods go, they have a lot to add as premium content.

Question however, if I pay for a pro server and it switches to a premium map, can everyone still join my server? That would be the better way to do it. Otherwise premium content will just be server killers.

I have a pro account.
If you configure the server you have complete control over map selection and how the server is set up.
You are not paying for a pro server you are paying for an account that lets you configure your own matches..including leaving off weapons and map selection...
