Quake Live -- could someone please explain it?

Could someone please explain what Quake Live is about?

Is this supposed to be a sequel for Quake III?

Why do they feel a need to run the game over the Internet instead of just releasing it for sale in stores as a normal online multiplayer FPS?

What is their plan for making money? Selling ads? Subscription fees?

Do I need to own Quake III Arena to play it?

Something about it strikes me as being a BS gimmick that won't serve the interests of FPS players. I like my FPS games to be BS-free and to allow for custom content; I don't want the game experience to be controlled by the game company.

I just read the Wikipedia entry for it and it sounds like it might be pretty cool. It's basically going to be Quake III Arena but for free? That sounds like a great idea--take a proven, older FPS game that you can't sell in stores anymore and release it to the public for free. (Why can't Epic Games do that with the original Unreal Tournament GOTY?)

Will people have to install the game on their own computers in order to play it? Seems like it should work that way rather than having to download it whenever you want to play.

Why they won't just release a real sequel to Quake III as a stand-alone online multiplayer FPS game is beyond me, though.

They took an older game - Quake 3 - and they made it run completely out of a web browser. So that you can play it basically anywhere. Quake 3's technology was at a point where they felt they could pull this off. I believe it will be ad supported in-game as a revenue method -- billboards / etc.

This isn't similar to releasing a sequel to Q3 (or Q4 for that matter). It's more like a separate project or an experiment.

It's supposed to be Quake 3, I haven't actually gotten a chance to play it yet though. Are you sure you remember what Quake 1 looked like? :)

It isn't necessary to download and install the game at all? I wonder how much lag and packet loss there will be. What do people do for servers?

It's more of a browser plug-in though, then you just play from your browser after that. Very fun.

Quake III style is tired. Gimme team-based objective any day of the week (Wolf:ET, Quake Wars, CoD4 sabotage, etc)

Maybe KMFJD needs glasses or something. Or maybe he doesn't understand the word "like".

I loved Quake 1's lego block look. So beautiful. I hope Id Software moves Quake 1 and Quake 2 onto Quake Live as well.

I was just playing quake 3 with all settings maxed out... looks much better than KMFJD's screenshot.

And is it just me, or is everyone getting invited to the beta EXCEPT for me? :(

So this is invite only right? Sounds like an interesting concept, if anyone has a spare invite that would be neat.

It's basically Quake III Team Arena but you launch it from a browser. You go to the site and it downloads some small bit of code to you and you'll run the game that way. It's completely free and its supported by ads. I'm guessing you'll see them while you're loading or something.

that is probably do to the 'brown medieval castle' motif in Q1 and Q3...

....and the medieval gray castle.....

.....and the blue medieval castle....

there may have been a green medieval castle setting, but I don't remember.
