Quake III Arena problem - clicking Multiplayer hard-locks the system

Just got QIII Arena not long ago; also downloaded the v1.31 patch. It does single player just fine too; very nice looking - quite a change from CounterStrike. However, as soon as I click on the Multiplayer option to try a game, the entire system locks up dead and needs to be reset. What gives here?

Try hitting alt + enter and doing it in windowed mode.

Edit: And to your NFS Problem, it probably has something to do with bad framerate(if you ever notice you have low framerate in a fps, everything has a bad delay)

I'll try that then.

NFS: I doubt it's the framerate. I still get well over 60fps with AA enabled (resolution maxes out at 800x600 in 16bit color for NFSIII).

Yup, Q3 wouldn't even let me into the main menu without a CD key. When I installed the patch, it asked for the key again and I entered it; no problems there.

Well so far I'm not impressed; sent a message to support@activision.com like it says - "The recipient was unavailable to take delivery of the message"

Seems to have gone through on Activision's support form....oh, great. Needs me to register; geez.:(

Hm, wonderful. Finally hit the last Submit button, got this:
Internal Server Error:
Server: websc04.rightnowtech.com
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator and inform them of the time of the error and anything you
might have done that may have caused the error.

Thank you for your patience.

Ok, well, I finally got through to tech support, and after several suggestions on their end, they simply said that since I'm behind a router, they can't offer support.:frown:

After you click multiplayer, are you waiting a bit?

If not, try waiting there for awhile. If you hear that faint clicking sound, then it's working.

Yes, I left it go now for over a minute; it then does come up. I think Zonealarm may have interfered too, but I had disabled that. Once it is in Multiplayer Mode, it can't get a list of servers.

If Q3 is blocked from the internet by a software or hardware firewall, it will hard lock the computer.

It will work fine with a software firewall like ZA. You need to run it in windowed mode so that when the ZA window comes up, you can tell it to let Q3 have access. Or manually add Q3 to the trusted program list.

I think a hardware router should work fine although it may block if it has a firewall. Put that computer on DMZ and disable ZA to see if it works. That will tell you if the problem is indeed firewall/router related.

Thanks everyone, but what is DMZ? I've heard that acronym somewhere but I don't know what it means.

It is a military acronym for de-militarized zone.

In this case it refers to setting a firewall so that machine is outside the protection of the firewall. i.e. it is not protected by the firewall and all packets are forwarded to it without filtering.
