Quake I?

I was cleaning out my rented storage the other day and I found the very first Quake game for my PC. What I want to know is will this work with XP? Thats all.

The original Quake is one of those games that never gets removed from my HD. I still love playing Rocket Arena with the Omnicron bots.

I forgot the switch to enable crosshairs. I think it must be done by manually editing the configuration files. If you're going to play, MAKE SURE YOU DO IT. Oh, and GLquake comes with most Quake I distros. You'll get much better graphics with that than if you were to play in Software mode...

You dont need GL Quake in XP just Win Quake. It is prefered that you run GLQuake. I am still playing Doom and Quake with the exspansion packs in XP.

Yes. If you're looking for better graphics, get the Tenebrae mod.

thats funny this thread came up. I was just at a lan party yesterday and we played the tenebrae mod...it was quite fun and brought back a few memories, but with better graphics 🙂

fuhquake is the only mod now that is allowed in the competitive qwca tourneys.. myquakeworld is too easily hacked.. there are only like 150 of us left still playing qwca competitively.

When I found eQuake I played for a bit, and there was still a bunch of servers around, it especially seems like the Russians like it 🙂

I've never played Q1, but Q2 was my first fps. I was addicted for about 6 months.

q2 was also my first fps. was so hooked to it. it's probably about time for me to go back and play q1, hmm? 🙂

When I try GL Quake, it always tells me I need a 3dfx video card to do that. I run Quake in D3D instead. You can get it here
D3D Quake

Did you try deleting the opengl32.dll from the Quake directory? If you selected the option during install, the opengl32.dll for Glide will be installed. If there's no opengl32.dll in the Quake directory, it defaults to the one in the \Windows directory and should work fine.

Ok well that worked but I can't change the resolution. When I have -width in the command line, GL Quake crashes. D3D Quake lets me change the resolution just fine and it works great so I'll just stick with it.

Get Fuhquake and Tenebrae. you will want 32bit textures on a new system. Yes the game is good, but I am very biased.

I just found out about Fuhquake because of this thread, and I am impressed. I've used Tenebrae for a while now, but Fuhquake just seems to be better.

There's alot of QW servers out there, but hardly anyone plays anymore. Anyone else interesting in some Quake1 MP?

The multiplayer for Quake sort of sucks. Team Fortress is the only part of online Quake that was any good.

lol multiplayer for quake sucks? quakeworld practically created online fps gaming (it started the tournaments at least)

That doesn't mean deathmatch doesn't suck. I respect what Quake started but I'm not going to say deathmatch is cool.
Of the 50,000+ people playing Half-Life, 34 of them are playing deathmatch.
Of the 1813 people playing UT, 352 of them are playing deathmatch.
Of the 1336 people playing UT2003, 650 are DM.
Of 2164 people playing UT2004, 222 are DM.

Quake started something cool but the multiplayer Quake had wasn't that great for the most part. It got pretty cool after a while though, when ID released the source for Quake. That's when all these cool mods started popping up, like Prozak mod for TF. Those days are long gone though, the Prozak servers are gone, and TF is dead. Just 2 years ago, Team Fortress was awesome, there was like 200 servers and they were all popular (pretty good for a game that's like 6 years old at the time). It would be nice if Quake2 or Quake3 had carried on the legacy and made another TF but that never really took off. Quake2 didn't have TF and Quake3's TF was very unpopular (maybe 10 servers if lucky). Quake3 TF is so unpopular that there isn't even a filter for it in All Seeing Eye.
