I just upgraded to a core2duo e6300 and 7950GT KO. The only games I've played in the last year are HL2, CSS, Day of Defeat Source. I was thinking of getting Quake 4. Is it any good or would I be better off passing it over?

Hell. Yes.
Don't listen to the people that say "It's just like Doom 3." Because they're wrong! It is an amazing game. It makes great use out of the Doom 3 engine. And unlike Doom 3, the flashlight is actually built into one of your guns :p

If you can get it for $20 bucks it's an OK game. There isn't a good story in it, but the action is fun.

I don't regret purchasing it. Although, I have to comment that the games you've played last year are very few and far between, your choices at this point at practically limitless. Is Quake4 the best out of all the games you've missed? Maybe for FPS games. Although Prey was pretty cool too.

It's $20 at WorstBuy right now. I might pick it up and try it out then. :)

Yes, it was a great game. Although, Doom 3 was better IMO.

Im playing Prey now, and it's decent, but not nearly as good as Doom 3 or Quake 4.
FEAR was aslso a good shooter.

Quake 4 is 'everything' Doom3 should have been

Excellent thread. I'll definitely give this one a try after reading this thread. Thanks for the link apoppin!

Like others who posted in that thread, I tried Doom3 and didn't like it. I had it installed for two days and then got bored and killed it. Quake 4 sounds like it has much better gameplay.

Quake 4 is ok, at best. Great graphics no doubt, but the Vehicles in it are rather meh. There are other games much better than it and more worthy of a purchase. Fear, Far Cry, CoD2 for exmple.

Quake 4 is definately one of the more fun SP shooters I've played. The vehicles do suck though. Better than prey in terms of sheer gameplay imo.

My Quake 4 Review:

Just beginning Quake 4: "I've played the first few levels since I have to wake up early tomorrow. Basically, Quake4 is Doom3 done right. <-for all you Doom3 haters. You guys should enjoy this game, there is a light on the gun.

It's still dark. And enemies do seem to spawn out of nowhere. But the AI is vastly improved. The don't have a set path and they shoot while they are getting cover. Most of the enemies get cover as well. Even the big ones that just charge you. Midst charge they take cover and try to surprise you. The graphics are a bit better, but only small details gained big improvements, so you might not notice too much. Textures still look kinda crappy. Inferface is very Doom3, so are the options. Quake4 is very Doom3ish and it seems to struggle to distinguish itself. Everywhere I look I see Doom3, Doom3, Doom3. So I would say, expect Doom3 with all the complaints taken into consideration. We now fight along others, whose AI isn't retarded. Music plays at times during the game ulike Doom3. And there is action galore with multiple enemies and allies on screen.

One of the big things that this game doesn't have that Doom3 did is great atmosphere. Although this game does try to scare you,... it's... not scarey. Nothing like Doom3's atmosphere. Action is this Quake4's main focus.

So far I like this game, but my biggest disappointment is how similar the textures and interface are to Doom3. "

Just beat Quake 4: It's basically Quake 2 with improved Doom3 graphics and without the annoying loading times. The story is crappy and nearly non-existant. It's unmotivating, so all you have to go by is action and the hope that the game ends soon.

It's a bit repetitive. If we do this, the Strogg fall. Almost there... Sht happens and now we need to do this and the Strogg fall. Almost there... Sht happens and this repeats until the end.

The action is pretty good, decent challenge, not annoying, but I wish it had the double shotty. The final bosses are also a decent challenge, but sometimes seem easier than fighting a horde of enemies due to the BFG. It's harder than Doom3's boss.

The vehicles are a joke and were just a stupid inclusion to the game. They are pointess, easy and non-entertaining. Just trying to extend the game length, although the length would do well without these annoying sections.

Graphics are ok as I've mentioned before, but the biggest updates to the engine seem most noticeable in people's heads. They now show pigment, which adds a lot. And they also increase the polys so we now get nice more human looking heads instead of Doom3's philips screwdriver heads.. And even though sometimes the textures arent' the best, at times the game can look very, very real. But these moments are rare. One of the things I love about these graphics is how nice the hands look. Better than any other game to date.

I enjoyed the single player a lot.....multi is a ball as well. As far as the single player Doom3 was more enjoyable for me.

It was an absolute blast the first time through. However, after that first time through, you will probably never play it again. The multiplayer is like a crappy version of Quake 3's.

FEAR is much much better IMO. I bought Q4 for $15 and wasn't unhappy with it, but it's hard to imagine a more run-of-the-mill shooter. I actually thought D3 was more interesting.

I'm actually really enjoying Prey. I think it's better than both DIII and Quake 4, if nothing else it adds new elements to the FPS. Nice atmosphere, nice graphics, etc. A story hokey as all get out, but don't they all have that :)

Definitely go with Q4....it will look great on your rig and the storyline and your assault team tagging along makes the game more engaging and interactive than most FPSs. In Doom 3 it is basically just you alone in the dark with monsters jumping out at you. Even Farcry, as much as I like it, is an isolating experience. FEAR just gets so repetitive with the same ol same ol environments. Get Q4 and pump up those graphics and enjoy the ride.

I forgot about Riddick - that is ten times better than Q4 IMO. What a sleeper - who would have thought that a movie license with an in-house engine could be so awesome?

Multi player is as challanging as Q3A, after this last patch

You can even turn the graphics down to stay competitive
My Q4 looks like my Q3 graphics .... no frills.

I haven't played Q3A in over 6 months I think now ...

... the last patch put a real fire into MP

I agree with everything you have said. except for that Far Cry bit. To be fair, the whole game wasn't waiting for the Tridgen to jump out so you can pump them full of lead.I thought that the point where you fought mostly Tridgen was the turnin point towards the worse for the game. It just felt like a different game altogether. And it fells weird that at one minute you're shooting down a helicopter and then the next you're shooting at a huge alien. :
