Quake 4 won't proceed beyond "loading game..."

I have had no issues with my PC prior to this.

The build:

Asus A8N SLI
Athlon 64 3200+ (was OC'd, but even tried stock 2GHz speed)
2 GB's of Kingston Hyper-X DDR RAM
2 Gigabyte 6600GT Zalman addition video cards (tried SLI and one card at a time)
Newest nVidia drivers for chipset and video card

Here's what I think is the clincher.... Windows XP x64 Professional Edition.

Anyone playing this game in x64 w/ an AMD/nVidia set up?

What happens is I drop in the DVD or select "Quake 4" from the Start Menu and the "Loading game..." graphic comes up on the screen. The DVD spins for a few, then the HDD light blinks a couple times... and that's it. Hours have gone by (literally... I went grocery shopping and came back) and the "Loading game...." is still on the screen.

*sigh*

Reinstall it? Ohter than that I would think, like you, that the problem would lie in the version of windows that you're using.

You know what...

Reinstall coming up.

Why not?

When I first installed it and tried to run it, I would just get a black screen. I didn't even get "Loading game..." until I rebooted. :(

I have this exact problem, it wouldn't go past the loading screen, I found out that it was trying to load too much stuff while I was running the game on Ultra and 1024x768, so to get past it, I lower the settings and load the game, then move my guy into an area that won't load a lot. Then I can set it back to Ultra and it loads fine.

Make sure you are running at a reasonable setting, first try playing the game on the lowest possible settings, if it loads then, you know you have the same problem as me.

How/Where do I change the settings?

I don't/haven't gotten to the point where I can set resolution/quality. I've only installed it and run the EXE and that's where I hang with the "Loading game...."

Oh ok, I would do the following things:

1) Run adware/spyware scan.
2) Run virus scan.
3) Defrag and run a registry cleaner, like CCleaner.
5) Reinstall.
4) Kill ALL processes, even explorer.exe and then try running the game.

If that doesn't fix it, then I don't know, a reformat would fix it but its silly to format over a single game.

Wait a minute... Fast write is just for AGP, isn't it?

Grr... That's how desperate I am. I'm willing to try anything.

The system is clean of virii, spyware, etc. It's actually a relatively new install..

Guess I'm screwed. :D

Actually... I have a partition I could install a 32-bit OS on. I'm looking for my 2K CD now. :p

Like I said... I don't even get that far. I'm talking THE FIRST SCREEN.

Doom 3 does the same thing. I fire it up and it freezes on the first screen with the imploding planet.

Something's up.

I would def go down to windows 32 :p.

But ya, fast-write is only for AGP.

I put 2000 on another partition. Everything works perfectly.

Go figure.

I've seen some folks using Q4 in x64, but I'm pretty sure the common denominator there is an ATI video card.

Shucks.

Looks like I'm dual booting now. ;)

Have you tried starting it from a console so you can see the program's output? That might tell you where it's getting stuck.
As for changing visual settings, you can do that without starting the game by editing your quake4config.cfg file in your q4base directory. Open in with a text editor and look through for things like resolution. There's at least one guide somewhere on the 'Net that explains a lot of config settings, but I can't seem to find it just now.
