quake 4 running a little slow?

what does everyone else with their shiny new x800gto2 softmodded to x850xt running this game at? according to xbitlabs it seems i should be running fine at 1600 res w/4xaa and 8xaf. now of course i have a single core processor oced to 2.4ghz and 1gb of ram compared to their 2 gb...but i would think that 1280 res w/ medium settings and 2xaa would be good. however it still is pretty choppy.

Are u sure? I played the demo 1280x1024 @ max even w/ 2 AA. It ran pretty nice IMO

I use a X850XTAGP (stock)
sempron 3100+ w/ a gig of ram 😱

I run Quake 4 in 800x600 for Multiplayer, and I own an X800XT. 12x10 is decent for single player play, but I can't run any higher than 8x6 for MP, the framerate dips make the game unplayable.

yeah take those reviews with a grain of salt for a couple reasons,.. for one if your average fps is 60,.. then your minimum is well into the 20's or below depending on where in quake4 you are. and imo thats not very playable, same as inappropriate4AT said.i play quake4 in 1600x1200 noAA 8xAF and my minimum fps isnt enough to go below the fps cap of 60/63 in single player or multiplayer

I run at 1280 x 1024, high details, but some MP maps take a huge hit, i.e. Bloodwork, depending on the quality of the server, and the speed and number of connections.

Sometimes turning off shadows gives a big boost.

yeah, i'd understand it if mp takes a hit on certain parts...but sp is running laggy for me as well...especially when i enter the rooms that are lit up and not all dark. i tried turning off shadows too but that didn't really help much.

Is your CPU an A64 or AXP? Quake4 is stressful on both CPU and GPU. I remember trying to run it with an AXP @ 2.37 Ghz with a 6600GT and there was a huge CPU bottleneck until I went A64. (and of course the whole upgrade cycle 'forced' me to get the x800 gto2 🙂 )

How about posting some links to 3dMark scores to see if there's anything amiss in your setup?

Get 2GB of RAM - that card should have no problems. Do you find it briefly locks up at all when going through certain doors?

Unpack the game by using a zip utility in its parent directory, about 12 .pk4 files, it should be a bit less laggy sience it is not compressing/uncompressing for everything.

On my system in sig, I run it at 1280X1024 at ultra settings and get mostly smooth gameplay. Framerate will drop into the lower 40s and upper 30s if in a particularly intensive level or if there is a lot of action on screen.
