If you don't have it yet, I'm selling mine. Mint in box, manual, cd version. Never been registered or used online. Check my FS/FT thread.

(Sorry, I don't have anything else to add :). Just can't miss an opportunity to pimp my wares.)

That's a shame. I remember playing Quake 2 CTF and I still think it was the best online game I've ever played in my life. I really miss playing it.

Now that I have new hardware I'm playing through the single player Q4 a second time.

I'll be jumping into multiplayer again soon once I knock the rust off.

id software FPS games drive like a sports car. No other FPS does it quite the same. Q4 is no exception.

more like a sports car that crashed, and burned. lol. just look at the amt of people playing the game, there's a reason why it's not popular.

there is a new patch coming out very soon, adds maps and a few game-types to multiplayer, supposed to be pretty cool

Marketting, level design, game design etc all determine if it's popular or not. The noob experience will also determine server population. Quake 4 is played by the same guys that were doing deathmatch with Quake 1. New quake players have a brutal learning curve to overcome so it may not be as enjoyable as say counter strike where you can easily find a noob riddled server to stumble around in. The handling of the game will only be noticed by those that take the time to get good at it.

The fact remains idsoftware games have the best handling out there. By handling I mean how the physics and graphics engines interract and how the player motion variables are tweaked. For instance: At what angle of incidence can you collide with a wall where you slip instead of stopping? At what rate does the slip increase compared to the angle of incidence? Why did they choose to have the player continue to move for a fraction of a second after the motion key was released? id Software games have the best handling out there.

As for popularity, it's popular enough. You can always find a game. Tribes is the same way. Few servers, but packed with some of the best players on the net. Brutal on the noobs too. :)

Quake X may never be as popular as other games out there, but that's fine with me. Nobody does deathmatch like Quake.

Learning curve? I'd have to argue that a bit. For a person that's completely new to CS, i'd say there's a pretty decent learning curve. There's already a huge community thats been playing the game for a long time now, so there's plenty of good players (same with Quake). But like any game, it will be filled with nubs. In CS you have to learn the buy system, and weapon recoils which are critical - unlike Quake. CS is also naturally a team based game, which requires a bit of effort - whereas Quake's spirit is 1v1 deathmatch. I'm by no means saying Quake has no learning curve, i'm just saying the difference is not as great as u make it out to be.

It should only take a few minutes to learn a deathmatch game. Maybe an hour to get the hang of something more complicated like Team Fortress. A week to get the maps memorized, a month to find all the intricacies (how to reach the quad in a single jump on q3dm17 for instance). These things are common to most FPS games.

I'm talking about the time you must invest before you aren't getting your butt handed to you badly.

In this regard Quake and Tribes are the worst. Tribes especially. The ratio of elite players to noobs/average players is just whacked. The lower server population is both a result of this and a cause of this. The lower population is partially due to the players gettign "distilled" down to the most hardcore. Some of the elite/noob ratio is also due to id software "fanboys". They have a pretty loyal following and the influx of new blood is limited.

You're a veteran player of CS and at least a handful of others I would guess. And have probably never played tribes (statistically a safe assumption given it's popularity).

You should give it a try. You'll totally see what I mean. You'll be living in WTF-ville for a month. :D
