A BETA update for QUAKE 4 is now available. This update is recommended for Windows users with Intel Hyper-Threading Technology (HT Technology) enabled processors, multiple processors, or systems with a dual core processor. The update is also required for Windows and Linux server admins as it addresses a recently identified problem with servers left unoccupied for very long periods of time (these servers will appear to be operating normally, but will crash clients that attempt to connect to them). This update will bring any previous version of the game (1.0.0 or 1.0.4) up to date and will not affect pure server, PunkBuster compatibility or protocol consistency.

id Software and Raven have worked with Intel to dramatically improve QUAKE 4 performance on systems with HT Technology, multiple processors, or dual core processors. Players who have a system with one of these configurations will notice performance gains in QUAKE 4 of anywhere from 25% - 87% depending on processor type. If you do not know whether or not you have a multi-processor, dual core, or HT Technology enabled system, please see the ReadMe file for simple instructions on checking your system. Please use the form at www.idsoftware.com/bugs/ to report any issues you find with the 1.0.5 update.

Finally, although we've released only small (but critical) updates to QUAKE 4 so far, we are working on a much broader update for release early next year, and we also have a couple of multiplayer map packs currently being tested for release in the near future. Stay tuned

From another forum:

ok here it is:
Opteron 170 dual core @ 2.7Ghz (i got lucky), each core 1024KB cache
DFI NF4 Ultra-D
7800GT @ 470/110
Audigy 2 ZS w/lates beta drivers (eax HD)

ok, i ran the demo again @ 1024x768, no AA, high quality (8xAF), to make it a little more cpu limited. i ran each twice and took the best score.
w/o SMP = 133.8 fps
w/SMP = 170.7 fps

I'm not sure you can do much to make this Intel only, and it looks like it isn't.

Hmm, ok, the review I saw must be in error then. Good news.

Just two quarks with this patchs

#1: For some reason enabling AA disabled the SMP render, which is why AA score seems lackluster due to SMP overhead.

#2: You have restart Quake 4 after using the "r_useSMP" toggle for the program to execute the correct threading or performance will suffer.

i seem to have done correctly, hence 133fps w/o smp and 170 w/smp

That's funny. I thought I did everything right too, but something's fubar'd. I load up fine and then after like 2 seconds I have some kind of gamma issue.... I can't even see three steps in front of me. No color either. Unplayable. Prescott 2.8 here.... Anyone else have this problem after the update?

Yeah, several weird issues with this beta patch... enabling SMP seems to kill the ability to take screenshots(at least with 4xAA enabled..haven't tried other settings yet).

Also had a gamma issue where it made things a bit darker(fixable, of course) but this effect seemed rather random and not easily reproduced.

Also had it mess up my desktop color settings at one point which was fixed with a reboot.

It does seem to have an effect on the overall smoothness when playing with SMP enabled but having it mess up my desktop colors is not bueno. :( I think I will just leave it off for now.
