Hmmm... I've been so busy, I didn't even hear anything about how this game did. Did it live up to the hype? Say, compare to Doom3 or Half-Life 2.

I have the same question as Aztech. $25 seems like a very good price, but I haven't heard much about the game or its online community. Anyone have first hand experience to encourage us uneducated masses to pick the game up?

I thoroughly enjoyed the game. I felt it was like Doom3 should have been... with squad mates and so forth. The graphics are great, not as dark as Doom3 yet still has it's dark and suspenseful moments.

I think the weapons were pretty good with a nice balance. Reminds me of the original Doom games where you had to budget your ammo and tactically choose which weapon would be the best for the situation.

Decent story, several unexpected twists.

I have the director's edition DVD for only a bit more in my FS/FT thread if interested. Don't know if that would be a breach of ettiquette to link it here so I won't... but you can find your way there I'm sure.

All in all, I recommend getting the game, wherever you choose... good game.

I agree I enjoyed it, and it was a lot more fun than Doom 3. The key word here is fun, I enjoyed the game, unlike Doom 3 where my biggest regret was not turning "God Mode" on sooner. It doesn't use the flashlight gimmick to a huge extent. After playing Doom 3 I used the flashlight in Quake 4 constantly to look into every single dark nook, and cranny, in hind-sight that was a waste of time. Which brings me to the other difference between it and Doom 3. It rarely does the monster spawning behind you gimmick, I can't think of any really, though I'm sure there were two or three times it happened. If a monster appears it's usually in front of you and you have a decent amount of time to react. Or it enters the room from a known entrance, that you usually have your sights trained on.

The multiplayer is FAST, like "Quake 3 Arena" fast. I like it, but then again I liked Quake 3, Battlefield 2, or Counterstrike it is not. One gripe is the server list is stupid hard to scroll through, and page up/page down aren't recognized inputs, meaning the only way to scroll through the server lists is to click and drag the scroll bar, and each tick advances the thing a whole page. The slightest twitch, and you've gone from the servers with 75-50ms pings, to the ones with 175-150ms. It's retarded, and I doubt it's going to get fixed because it's not a show stopper.

One of the coolest scenes though was the one where you and two other marines are in this one area where the lights are completely out, and you're all using your flashlights, AWESOME. It was very suspenseful, the engines graphics did a fantastic job and actually enhanced the experience. The NPC's that fight along side you are not schmucks and actually help you. They did a good job of assigning personalities to the NPCS and it worked really well. That was my biggest complaint I wish more of the game was played with squad-mates where actually it works out to more like 35% with, and 65% without. And when you get down to the nuts and bolts of it thats a very good thing considering how annoying the brain-dead, suicidal, friendly-fire prone NPC's that populate every other FPS are.

COOP mode would be friggan AWESOME in this game, too bad. Quake 2 supported it out of the box, wish they had done so with this game.

two more minor quibbles you still have no legs, you're just a floating head in space running around with a gun strapped to its face. Spooky as that is you don't cast a shadow either, which seems even more odd to me considering that you cast one when you play multiplayer deathmatch but not in single player.

I wholeheartedly agree with Manno. It was a great game! It was what Doom3 SHOULD have been. What he says is what I was thinking in my head as well. Good NPCs, good story, and the Doom3 engine fit the game very well. I'm glad I got this game. :) And for that price, I'd jump on it. :) That's how much it sells for USED in the FS Forum. :p

# English version of Microsoft Windows 2000/XP
# Pentium 4 2.0 GHz or Athlon XP 2000+ processor
# 512MB RAM
# 8x CD-ROM drive and latest drivers
# 2.8GB of uncompressed free hard disk space (plus 400MB for Windows swap file)
# 100% DirectX 9.0c compatible 16-bit sound card and latest drivers
# 100% Windows 2000/XP compatible mouse, keyboard and latest drivers

The best part is that it doesn't require a graphics card.

Heh heh, seriously though, good deal. Thinking of buying it.
