Quake 3 on a GF3 Ti 200 FPS too low.

On Quake 3 Arena, i'm only getting about 90 to 100 frames per second at medium quality and 1024x768 with my new Ti200 but I've read it should be closer to 200 FPS. Any idea what the problem might be?

I'm running the Ti200 at 220/460 on a 1.4 GHz Athlon and got 6349 on the 3D Mark.

I had a Radeon LE installed last and wonder if the drivers for that might not have been completely uninstalled. Is there a program to make sure it was uninstalled?

Same here, i'm only getting 120 fps using the /timedemo 1 benchmark in QUake 3 in 800x600 with lots of visuals turned down and also the newest detonator drivers.

I have a duron 700@931 with 512 megs of ram. What give?

I know that the GF3 series are not designed for high FPS at Low Res with no or little eye-candy on. They are more high res, full detail, lots of eye-candy friendly. Try running it at high res as you can go with max detail and see how it plays. If you don't experience slow-downs it should be performing as it suppose to.

One thing many people don't realize is that they don't fully uninstall the previous video driver before they put on the new video card and its driver. That is why some people experience lock-ups and slow-downs. The registry is Number 1 important factor. There are many ways to uninstall the previous driver in long step process. It's a pain in the ass but I do it and it works for me. But also the cleanest way to do this is C:/format. LOL

Yah something is definitely wrong with those scores...my V5 beats them at the same settings, but then gain, the V5 scales well with faster CPUs. Maybe there is a console command that limits gf3 frames? Got my bro and bro-in-law the same card...I'm tempted to toss one of em in to "make sure they work OK" :)

com_maxfps 0 type that in the console and watch as the magic unfolds, trust me ;)

Thanks Chubbz, Now using com_maxfps 0 I get between 70 and 130 FPS on Quake 3 but mostly it's still below 100. I'm on a cable modem. Shouldn't it be more like 180 FPS on an overclocked Ti 200?

Thanks MeanMeosh who gave this answer on another thread:

<< for all the quake heads, this is because quake limits the max fps. >>

<< goto your quake dir (usually c:\program files\quake 3 arena) and edit quake3config.cfg with wordpad under the baseq3 dir. >>

<< find the line: seta com_maxfps "85" >>

<< and change the number in quotes to something like 400. >>

<< and voila. different mods require this file to be edited under different folders (wfa, rocket arena, etc.) >>

Hmmm...I just formatted and installed XP and a Leadtek Ti200 (@240/540).

With full effects @ 1024x768, I'm only getting 95 fps. @ 640x480, I'm only getting 96 fps. I've changed my max fps to 400, but nothing changed. These scores are odd for a PIII 933...

Turning all effects down, I'm at 98 fps @ 1024x768...this is really odd...

Edit: Now that I think about it, these scores are barely higher than my GeForce DDR under Win2k...

Your scores do seem very low for a mid range video card, with my Videologic Kyro 2 in Q3 I get 121fps at 640x480, 111fps at 800x600 and 94 fps at 1024x768 on timedemo 1 with everything at MAX settings, that's also with SOUND enabled so my scores are abit lower than if I had used no sound.

If your GF3 Ti200 with DDR memory can't beat a £75 ($109) video card with SDR memory running at 175mhz then there's obviously something wrong there, maybe you need to upgrade your cpu?

How do you guys measure FPS in Quakey3???
I don't need to allow extreme high FPS during the game. It plays so fast and smoothly without dropping much FPS from 90.

In the Timedemo1 with my P3 Copper set@ 1430mhz w/ GF3 Ti200@ 240/540 and the graphics setting@ 1024 x 768 x 32bit color with EVERYTHING MAXED ALL eye-candies(except AA & Aniso) I get 8.0 sec/ 166.4 FPS mon.. :D

I just make a simple text file called bench.cfg and place it in baseq3 directory containing the following:-

com_maxfps 0
timedemo 1
demo demo001

Everything should be at max settings with sound disabled, you don't want the sound card causing a performance hit because your benchmarking the video card.

To run it you just use exec bench.cfg and wait for the demo to finish, the best demo to use however is demo4 which is available with the latest Q3 v1.30 I think.

I don't think I should need to upgrade a PIII 933 yet...

My 3DMarks are competitive for other Ti200's in my CPU range, 5600 (256 DDR was 2700), so I'm led to believe the problem is Quake...

I don't know about other OpenGL games... I believe all of my other games are D3D. Diablo II seems to be quite a bit less choppy.

Is there a free OGL benchie out there?

Check your AGP aperture size in your bios. I had the same problem with my GF3. Changed from 64 to 128 and waaalllllahhh- all is good.

JustStarting, thanks for the tip. I increased the aperature size and my frame rate in Q3 really improved from what it was. In 1024*768 I am now getting 123 fps. This still seems low, but it is alot better than before.

My system stats are:

MSI k7T-Pro2-A
Duron 1.2
512 meg pc133
VT GF3 Ti200

I have downloaded the lastest drivers and used detonator destroyer to get rid of the old drivers.
Any advice to increase my fps would be appreciated.

I am thinking of reformatting my HD.

Thanks.
