Quake 2 - Totally Crap????

Ok so I'm not a big Quake fan but I did enjoy Quake 1 and also Doom. The problem I have is that as far as I can tell, Quake 2 is really ordinary and very frustrating.

The main thing I hate about it is that I can hardly see anything becuase its so bloody dark! Is it just my monitor or did the programmers for some bizaare reason think it would be fun to try to solve puzzles and fight in the dark?

Also it just seems that apart from the nice lighting effects, the actual levels are extreemly boring to look at and interact with.

I havent played it very much becuase I can't stand not being able to see anything, but I am interested in knowing others opinions on this.

what kind of video card do you have? i know the TNTs end up really dark in quake 2.

i personally like quake 2 better than quake 3. it doesnt take such nice hardware just to play the game. if you have a better system i think games with more details are great but for pure game play i prefer quake 2. sure its not as realistic looking but hey, youre shooting lasers and rockets everywhere!

The Quake 2 gamma setting is very low by default so increase your OpenGL gamma a lot before you start to play.

But yes the game is quite dark overall because the textures are mainly composed of darker colours. Stick with it though. It's a good game and it will grow on you. 🙂

Ahhh this is very interesting. I do have a TNT 2 card! but why would it be much different with a TNT based card?

I have the gamma settings at maximum. I wonder, is there any way of setting brighter gamma settings outside Quake 2 that would effect the games brightness? Or is am I talking silly?

Quake 2 like many older games doesn't control the gamma value by itself but rather uses a percentage of your current gamma setting (1 being 100%, .5 = 50% etc). So you need to raise your OpenGL gamma setting in your driver control panel. If you don't have one (I don't think nVidia does) you need to raise your 2D display gamma as it's likely your card will use this value for everything.

If you get bored with the game and have a good internet connection, try downloading Gamespy and play online. There are a lot of good mods out there. Also try Planet Quake for some help on the video settings. Good luck!

i never had fun playing single player q2, IMO deathmatch is all quake2 is good for, and damn great at it. as for the gamma settings, download q2gamma... pm me if you want me to send it to you somehow...
