I thought the level design in the original Quake 2 was sterile and a little boring. But the two expansion packs had superb level design with good placement of crates, water, and level backtracking to open up new areas. Also their new weapons were fun to use:

I regularly replay both to this day because they’re very enjoyable.

Quake goes 1 > 3 > poo > 2. Quake 2 was just too slow (mechanics, movement, etc.). Though I'm not considering single player at all in this opinion.

Quake 2 will be 20 years old on December 9th 2017.

I don't need further reminders as to how old I am. I'm more than ready to point out errors in release dates if it benefits me.

Quake 2 CTF was the defacto Quake for me. Don't dismiss Quake 2 so easily. It was absolutely fantastic. I must have spent hundreds of hours at it in the late 90's.

(comparing on campaign quality)

Q2 campaign was too easy because it allowed the player to hold on to pick-ups like quad damage. Whenever anything too difficult comes along, the player can just use up those pick-ups (all at the same time IIRC?) and breeze through it.

Q4 is enjoyable. Q1 is a monster (probably the best), especially if you try to rush through a level :) Q3 was the least creative, obviously.

Its physics were rubbish, and the rocket launcher was irritatingly slow. You could actually shoot YOURSELF with a rocket in that game (catch up to them after firing, just by running and jumping).

This. I dont think I ever finished the single player campaign. I worked for an ISP in late 90s and had built a dedicated Q2 CTF server. Had a blast playing for years until Q3A supplanted the CTF tournament scene.

Killing someone in the elevator shaft on low gravity was the first time I thought, "Okay, that's a bit much" on the gore as the elevator shaft filled up with blood. :D

The final Black Widow boss from the second expansion would mimic your power ups. So if you were invincible and dishing out quad damage, she'd be doing the same.

I thought that was quite an original way of dealing with the problem. ;)
