So I just finished replaying both Quake 1 expansions and really enjoyed it. Actually the original game remains one of my favorite single player experiences ever.

Some innovations at the time:
  • Probably the first ever OpenGL hardware accelerated PC game.
  • Gibs, bouncing body parts, and blood spray.
  • Patrolling, staggered, knockdown, standing, and breathing animations for monsters.
  • Impressive geometric detail in the level architecture.
  • Water warping effects on surfaces and underwater.

I don't play multi-FPS anymore but Quake 1 was my most played out of that genre. I remember rocket jumps and insanity with grappling hooks (mod). Thresh came out of that era recognized as the 1st pro gamer.

I'm a big fan of classic shooters, but somehow the first Quake is one I missed all these years; outside the demo anyway. I did recently put it on my GOG watch list, so next time it's on sale I plan to pick it up. I'm sure it's worth full price of course, but I have a large enough backlog.

Wow. I remember downloading the QuakeWorld update and playing CTF for the first time. Hell of a time...

Ultima Underworld brought the 3d, Castle Wolfenstein used it in a shooter, then Doom, then Quake. Heretic and Hexen for the fantasy and magic theme.

Was an incredible new experience, perhaps the biggest 'wow' development in gaming. From paper and pen dungeon mapping to 3d visuals and fast shooting.

Has it been 20 years? Happy birthday Quake and 3D FPS gaming.

I remember the first time I ever saw that game. It was 1:30 am and I was in a science building. A friend was playing the game in a darkened room. I watched and was blown away. I had played Doom before, but Quake >>> Doom.

Old time Q1 player here. Played Netquake and then QW for many years. ClanGib and The Stone Clan.

Great times. The teamwork required in TDM on DM3 was insane. So fun

I think you and I must be of a similar age - I was an enormous id fan back then and still am. Quake 1, 2 and 3 are still among my top FPS experiences - and not for nostalgic purposes either. Quake 3 is still a great way for me to get my twitch response up after a long day at work.

Happy 20th anniversary, Quake...

so true. control quad and RA (and YA at portal and pent to a lesser extent) and you got the map locked down.

i was assigned RA control so i ran that and the spawn near portal and maze (where the mega health was).

who were you in TSC? i used to idle in your clan's channel. i was in [:x] (crossbones)

I remember picking up a free demo disk before it's release and thinking "Holy shit".

Also pretty sure I sent the final game to my buddy via email in 5MB rar'ed chunks :)

Also, I had the hottest crazy, read-head girlfriend when this came out. Wow... 20 years ago.

Oh man, so many hours spent on Quake CTF, back when there weren't even flags but just giant gold keys in each base. You could grapple hook a guy and never let go until he bled out !! That unforgettable sound of the poor guy trying to get back to base too .. Hah !

I played so much that I developed a bad case of dry eyes. Went to eye Rx to explain my condition, and he soon determined what was causing it, and then tells me that he is a Quake CTF addict as well !! We swapped fave server addys and had a good laugh about some gaming moments.

I went 9 months straight without missing getting in a round every night, played almost exclusively on Cains Lair. There will never be as vibrant and large a community as Quake and Quakeworld - it was the only game in town, and many of us will never experience a gaming nirvana like that game provided. I'm playing TF2 now, but I think I need to give Quake another try just to see how my fast twitch skills have deteriorated.

Man, I remember when I was remote access specialist and me and the network group would turn off the lights in the office, call each others phone in conference calls and play over the network. After a while we would get tons of calls from users saying the network was crawling. We had 10mb back then and many of those connections were split to 5 or even 2.5. We made the network crawl to a halt. Good times!
